The discovery was made in the igravel pit at Barton Trobeck near . Felton, Santa Cruz county by Daust,er Baker and Lawrence Garrelts, lessees of the pit. Later the Museum was told of the discovery and Dr. C. L. Camp, director, and eriz of the museum staff went to the scene. remainder of the skeleton removed from the deep gravel bed and _ returned with the fragments of the skull, which are now being. assemb‘led and studied. Later. Dr.. Camp sent six-trained investigators to the site under the direction of Goeriz, to remove the remainder of the skeleton. This has an indicated length of about fifteen feet and a heavy skeletal siructure with enormousl thick. ribs. From the examination thus far made it has been determined that the specimen may be a form of. Metaxythérium, the ancestor of the modern sea cow, and that it may have ranged in the Upper Miocene or about 6,000,000 years ago. The’ only other specimen found in Western North America was that taken at Lompoc in a diatomic formation some years ago. This was an incomplete skull. SACRAMENTO, May 30—(UP)— + Independence? . MENACE FORESTS THIS SUMMER SACRAMENTO, May 30.—(UP)— . Prospects for the 1940 fire ‘season are not any too bright, according to . State Forester M. B, Pratt, who pre. . . dicts-that fires, particularly in the . erass and brush areas, will be almost las severe this year as last. More rain fell in various parts of ' the state this year than last year, /with the precipitation being above normal. The snowfall was scattered, ; particularly in the southern Sierra, where there was not enough snow up. !to the 5000-foot elevation to provide l for snow sports. Pratt said, howev‘er, the rainfall will delay the fire / season in timbered areas at elevaltions of 4000 feet or more-in the Sierra and along the redwood forests
on the coast. Below the timber belt in the Sierra, Pratt pointed out, there is a very heavy stand of grass, which will constitute as bad a fire hazard as was expérienced last year. In the counties of Southern California and in the San Joaquin valley, rangers are having from five to ten fires every day, and when the temperature is ‘high and the humidity low, as has been the case during the last two weeks, these fires are proving exceedingly difficult to control. Witnessed Graduation— Mr. and Mrs. P. N. Phariss motored to Berkeley and attended graduation exercises of their daughter, Miss Margaret /Phariss. Miss Barbara Phariss, another . daughter panied them. Miss Lillian Douglass of San Francisco who had been a guest of Miss Margaret Pharissin Nevada City the past week, returned with them. CROWD IGNORES MONEY BAG SEATTLE, Wash.
