SAICRAMENTO, May 1.—_Impogition of additional taxes upon the people of California to create a fund fdr.
hiring of a political press bureau, and
palitical workers in addition to paying for political broadcasts rather
than the necessity to finance state
government was charged as the motive behind the governor’s demand)
for sixty-three million dollars in new
taxes today by Assemblyman Ray
Williamson of San Francisco.
“Lavish promises of jobs in return
for political support during the campaign last year have backfired on
the administration due to the economy drive in the legislature,’’ said
Williamson. “Therefore, Governor
Olson has been unable to make political pay-offs as a result of efforts
of genuine economy legislators.’
“Determined to save the people's
money from being wasted, the ‘economy bloc’ has cut down the governor’s all time high budget of five
hundred fifty seven million dollars
to a point where it covers necessary
functions only.’’
“Faced with this unexpected situation the administration has but
one chance to raise the money for
jobs to reward the politically faithful—create new taxes to furnish the
money. These new taxesare not necessary for the proper conduct of the
state government, therefore we are
opposing them.’’
Williamson pointed to the abnormal increase in taxes during the last
few years up to 400 per cent more
in 1938 than the figure of 1932. Federal, state and county tax collections
for 1938 amounting to two hundred
and seventy nine million dollars to‘aled twenty two per cent. of the per‘onal income of the entire state,
“Despite this staggering burden
our state administration would saddle California’s taxpayers with sixty-three million dollars in new taxes, a large portion of which would
be used‘to satisfy the persistent
clamor of hitherto unpaid political
pital at Decoto. He moved to the
supporters,”’
“Bconomy-minded members of the
state legislature do not intend that
a political dynasty shall be created
at the expense of those who pay the
state’s bills,’’ Williamson said, ‘‘even
though cowardly and un-American
tactics be employed by groups expecting to profit by such wasteful
and unmecessary expenditure of the
neople’s monéy.”’
