PAYROLL OF 16
Affording employees of
the company’s financial
and position, President James B.
Black is this week sending to each
of ‘them a summary of the annual
report recently made to stockholders.
It reviews the sources of the company’s 1937 revenue, the disposition
made icf it, and the ownership of
securities.
Addressing the report to his fellow employees, President Black in a
foreword invites them to send for a
copy of the annual report, if they
wish more detailed information than
it is possible to include in the summary’s rather meager outline.
“Viewed either from the standpoint of employees, of stockholders,
or of the consuming pupbliic,’’ says
this foreword, “the results of the
year’s operations may ‘be regarded
as generally favorable. At least we
have spared no effort to fulfill fairly our responsibility’ to each of these
three groups, whose interests, while
sometimes apparently divergent, are
in all important respects identical.
It is evident that no one of these
groups can long profit unduly at the
expense of the others.
“To you upon whose indvidual and
collective efforts the success of our
business so largely depends, I wish
on ‘behalf of the management to express cordial good will. We hape that
the spirit of enterprise and cooperation which has made this organization outstanding among the utilit-jes*of the country may continue to
guide our course in ‘the future.”’
The high lights of the report
point out that while the business
generally prospered during 1937,
operating erpenses, including taxes
and reserves showed an increase that
was 50 per cent more than the gain
in gross revenues.
Langest single item of operating
costs was the payroll, amounting to
$16,138,000. This was $1,368,000
more than 1936, and upwards of
$3,000,000 more than in 1933. Additionally, $6,911,000 of payroll was
charged to constructive account,
bringing the year’s total payroll to
more than $23,000,000. SubstantialQUALITY WORK SKILLFULLY

Shearer, advertiser; Betty O'Conner,

sports; Annette Smith and Alice

A salad dressing that is ready
made and keeps quite a while in the
refrigerator is certainly a handy
thing when one wishes to hurry up
with a spring or summer salad. The
French Chef dressing given today
will be a great aid for the hurry up
luncheon. Put on some plain lettuce
and you have a delicious salad. It
makes a real salad with sliced tomatoes and lettuce, cold asparagus
and lettuce, hard boiled eggs and
lettuce and with a dozen other combinations.
French ‘Chef Salad Dressing
1 can Campbells tiomatio soup.
2-3 cup vinegar.
1-2 cups salad oil.
1-2 cup sugar.
1 teaspoon salt.
1-2 teaspoon dry mustard.
2 tablespoons worchester sauce.
A little paprika.
Garlic if desired.
Beat together. This makes over a
pint of dressing. Keep in refrigerator.
ly all classes of employees are receiving hligher weekly pay than at

history, although the five day week
is established operating practice.
The company paid $14,983,000 in
taxes, an increase of $2,995,000 over
1936. This would amount to more
than $100 per month for every employee on ‘the payroll. Included vin
the taxes was $670,000 for unemployment relief and\old age ‘benefits
under the Social Security act. AddiBOOK FOR 8TH. GRADE:
