Darke on I wonder if you remember having read a Baconian essay in which the great author extolled the exquisite pleasure ex. perienced by one who stands,-in safety, upon a commanding eminence and watches a battle raging furiously in the valley below. When I first read it, years ago, I knew instinctively, that Shakespeare was himself and-Bacon just another man. ‘Shakespeare loyed mercy and the sight of berserk hum‘ans engaged in deadly conflict, would have irked his artistic soul with rare disgust. The bard of Avon in his most ‘athletic days, would have climbed no pinnacle just for the thrill of looking down upon a scene of unspeakable ugliness. [wonder if you will now come with me—in fancy—and experience ecstacy in the contemplation of Nature’s serene majesty and loveliness; we stand in a coign of a cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean; it is night—a moon hangs low in the western sky; it is a big, yellow moon and across the ocean’s tranquil breast, lies a golden pathway, stretching from one sandy shore below us into the distant and unknown realms of i = . infinity. We wonder where it would lead if we could follow; far, far away, past magic islands of the west, coral reefs and caves where mermaids dwell—far beyond Cathay, and then— amid the silvery clouds veiling the distant horizon we seem to see—the smiling towers and gleaming spires of T’ yeer-nan’oge, the Land of Heart’s Desire. For just an instant we hear its chiming bells and feel the soft caresses of its perfume laden air. Soon the vision fades, a cold wind comes up from the sea, our moment of high exhaltation. is past; we turn regretfully homeward; but memory goes with us guarding something of rare beauty and excellence which will be our own forever. ; I wonder if our dreams and visions of beauty and truth, faith and justice, are ever quite forgotten. . Over twenty years ago an Armistice was declared, and the great World War came to an end. Can anyone who realized its significance, ever forget the mad joy of that shining day? Humanity stood upon the mount of vision, and looked out over a turbulent sea which had suddenly become calm and beautiful; the golden pathway of sons 7 away from the hideous past,.and men dreamed of a new Id ruled by sanity and justice; a world through which the four horsemen would never ride again; a world wherein men were brothers, a world wherein aspiring souls could formulate plans for human’ happiness and well being and work unhindered for their full fruition. A world of peace—the miracle we thought had happened, the millennium was at hand. . The vision faded in the years that followed, dreams were . . broken, but the world could not forget. Sometime out of the hearts and minds of men will come a new and better way of life; and our vision of what the world should be will come true. I hope we shall never fail to obserye Aniiistice Day; of all the days we celebrate, it is the most truly significant, it holds the brightest hope for all the world. It appeals to. the fieart and conscience of mankind; it is a challenge to man’s intelligence, his courage and will to do; from the memories it awakens, the hope it inspires, will come a better’ : <0 I wonder when the moon swings low Above the far horizon’s rim, “And all the shining stars of night Before her radiance grow dim, To see a golden pathway stretched Across the ocean’s tranquil breast Which seems to lead far, far away To magic isles of peace and rest. : ee 4 * —A. MERRIAM Ci 1 ao Rt wishes to raise the community health level, and consequently the level of community happiness and efficiency, by making a trained nursing service . available to all. The money can be found among them; some will give time if necessary; but how will they go about it? The Red Cross is ready. Trained personnel, tested methods, advice if asked for—all are at the group’s disposal. So our own Nevada County Visiting Nurse service was born; so our high school class in home hygiene, which means a better life for the ‘members of the class, a better start in life for their children; so our swimming and life saving classes, which mean not only lives saved but increased enjoyment of life for those who take part; so our emergency aid to the veteran, the transient, or other individual in need of a helping hand. Ours is a better, safer, happier community because of the Red Cross. If our loved assembly of homes and businesses were to be laid waste tomorrow, we know that with telegrapic rapidity the friendly neighborhood spirit of the Red Cross would come to our aid. And in the days and years of safety and prosperity, we know that. the Red Cross stands ready to Bret Harte Another New ‘Customer Every baby is a rare, welcome prize. On Tuesday he went to the Feather (River near Oroville fishing and enroute a huge six point buck nearly ran his car off the highway, just af-. ' ter deer season closed. In the'party fishing Tuesday were Will and Robert Tamblyn, A. Cartoscelli and Lane. All got the limit, two big salmon each, weighing 40 pounds or better. From good sources it was learned that the 25 pound salmon were thrown back into the river being not good enough for bait. Salmon are running fine and many limits are caught, ae Receiving 118 Bush Street NATIONAL HOTEL J Hospital — YOU WILL BE PLEASED WITH OUR COFFEE SHOP
