Lindgren has served as vicepresident of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, president of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, The Society of Economic Geologists and the Geological Society of America and was unanimously chosen to be Honorary Chairman of the Sixteenth International Geological Congress, held in the United States in 1933. Lindgren’s writings, constituting unquestionable evidence of his industry, devotion to his chosen profession and his pre-eminence in it, embrace than 175 independent titles. Virtually every merchant in Nevada City, restaurants excluded, were represented either on the petition or at the special meeting. The members expressed a desire that the Grass Valley merchants would also close all day, since it has been an annual custom until this year. TRAFFIC MENACE ON HIGHWAY T0 BE ELIMINATED Street Superintendent Herbert Hallett and crew will make improvements in the northern part of the city during the winter. A rough strip of roadway across and northeast of the Dr. A. H. Tickell home is to be cut down in the spring with the assistance of the state division of highways according to present plan. This “hump” is eight feet at the highest point and is bad for cars making the turn from the TahoeUkjah highway into the county hospital road. The.sewer lines and the water mains will be dug out and placed deeper in the earth. The season is too short this fall to attempt muddy strip for winter travel. NORTH SAN JUAN P.T.A. WILL GIVE BENEFIT DANCE The North San Juan Parent Teacher Association is giving a benefit dance in their city Saturday evening to assist a family who had their home and contents destroyed by fire in that section recently. The price of admission. to the dance wiil be 50 cents a couple. The funds raised in this way will be used to pay for materials for a home. A lumber company in the district gave lumber at cost and North San Juan residents went in a body and held a house raising bee last Sunday. Many people have donated other necessary things. The father of the family is ill and every effort is being made to make them comfortable throughout the winter. MASONIC COMMANDERY Nevada Commandery conferred the order of the Temple on a candidate in the Masonic hall in Nevada City last evening. Refreshments were enjoyed after the meeting. Phillip Keast of Grass Valley is commander of the local lodge. Fred A. Austin of Alleghany was among a large group of sorrowing friends who came to Nevada City yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral of the late Charles Godfrey. Mr. Austin is bookkeeper at the 16to-1 mine where Godfrey was employed. : Mrs. RB. J. Haverstotk returned yesterday from Glens Ferry, Idaho, where she spent some time visiting she went fishing, deer hunting and pheasant hunting. Mrs. Haverstock will leave Saturday for Taft where she plans to make her home. Dick Parsons, who is employed by the state at Hornbrook, arrived in .
