COUNTY The Women’s Board of the Golden Gate International Exposition has invited the students of the junior and senior high schools of the state to participate in an Essay-Contest— the subject of which concerns itself with the Pacific. Area and the contributions of Pacific Cultures and Resources to contemporaneous civilization, Miss Bernice Glasson of Grass Valley, chairman for Nevada County on the committee functioning under the Women’s Board, has arranged for the essay contest in the Nevada City, Grass Valley and Truckee: high schools. Assisting her in directing its details is an essay committee for the county which includes Mrs. Ella M. Austin, County Superintendent of Schools; Gustav E. Hoffman, Truckee; H. E. Kjorlie, Nevada City and Henry I. Spiess, Grass Valiey. The essay contest is designed to interest the students of the state in the exposition theme—A Pageant of the Pacific. Is is sponsored by the Women’s’ Board, approved ‘by the State Department of Education and supported by the California Federation of Women’s clubs. The Women’s Board felt that the enjoyment of the exposition would be enhanced, and the stimulus for further study of the countries and cultures of the Pacific area would be deeper and of more educational value if the young people who must soon share the responsibility of meeting the problems of the Pacific, could approach them with more vital knowledge of the Pacific countries. Séts of illustrated mounts, featured in connection with the essay contest which have been shuttled from county to county since September 1, as.an aid to students who have entered the contest have care of the courty superintendent of s¢hools and for the next two weeks will hang in the high school of Grass Valley, Nevada City and Truckee. These mounts illustrate the colorful countries of the Pacific area— including China, Japan, Indo-China, Siam, the Malay countries, and the islands of the South Pacific. Also the native culturés of Mexico, Central America, and the North Aimerican Indians. Students are invited to study these mounts since they are concerned with the subjects included in the field of competition for essay writing. The closing date of the essay conMisses.
