Around the Dome—Jobs in private
employment for 18,317 persons and
in public employment for 13,065
persons were found during October
by the state employment service. The
state department of motor vehicles
has set a new low record on the cost
of operation of its fleet of vehicles,
automobiles operating for an average of 2.27 cents per mile and motoreycles for 1.19 cents per mile.
The state received a check for $4,477,767 from the federal government to aid in financing old age
pensions, blind aid and children’s
aid during October, November and
December.
The College of Agriculture at Davis has reached the limit of its facilities for handling students, Dean W.
L. Howard told the Agricultural
Committee of the Sacramento Chamber of Commerce last week. Enrollment this year is nearly 1,000 students, an increase of 25 per cent
over last year, he said. More capital
improvements will be required to
care for te expected increase in college population in 1937 Dean Howard declared. .

Sacramento has built more homes
duringsthe last ten months than were
built here in the previous four years
—and still the supply of dwellings
is about 1,000 short of what will be
required in the next two years. A
half million dollars worth of building started in October brought the
total of building permits issued
since January 1 to $5,853,882. Of
this total, $1,767,039 is for construction of 374 new homes. From 1932
to 1935 inclusive a total of 337 one
family homes valued at $1,567,010
were constructed.

Auto Show will be in the Memorial

California forest fires which this
season caused’ losses of more than
$12,000,000 have been started by the
state and federal forest officials and
members of civic organizations following a conference in the _ state
capitol. The group will reconvene
soon to develop specific plans. Meanwhile, federal officials were experimenting with ‘‘flying fire enginés’’
carrying chemical fire extinguisher
bombs, which may be used in fighting northern California fires next
summer.
A joint meeting of the Mining Committee of the Sacramento Chamber
of Commerce and the Mining Asgssociation of California, Sacramento }district, will be held at 6:30 p. m.
Thursday, Novemiber 19th. Waldemar F. Dietrich, head of the mining
department of the Sacramento Junior College, will ‘be the _ speaker.
