The Hoge Development’ Company
are busily engaged at present in the
installation of electric power, on
their new properties in order to
operate their work of development,
with greater speed and efficiency.
They are just completing a compressor building and blacksmith shop
which is of ample’ proportions to
house all equipment necessary for
the company’s present needs.
This coming week, they expect to
put in the necessary concrete foundations for the compressor, motor,
ete., which is already for installation
as soon as the foundations are in
place, and properly hardened to
stand the strain.
The development of this Company
up to date, has been of a very satisfactory nature, and for that reason, the management decided upon
the installation of mod2rn up-to-date
equipment in order’ to prosecute
their development work with economy and efficiency.
Mr. floge the president of the

he is more than ever convinced that
this mine will eventually be a proven fact.

There was considerable “wind but

CITY TRUSTEES TO PUT
TEETH IN TRAFFIC LAW
Tightening up of the enforcement
of the recently enacted traffic ordinance was the principal item of business discussed by the city trustees
at the adjourned meeting held Friday night. In the absence of Mayor
Holmes, Trustee Bennetts acted in
the capacity of chairman in an efticient manner.
The officers reported that they had
made around 100 citations for violations of the ordinance so far but the
amount of fines levied had been infinitessimal in court. Judge Dow in
conversation stated to The Nugget
that there. had been conflicting inenforcement .
was actually to commence and for
that reason he had been’ turning
offenders loose. He stated that he
was not in favor of making a revenue producer out of the ordinance
in any event. The trustees instruct
ed special Police Officer Hallett to
proceed with the marking of the
streets for parking and traffic lanes
and that if people did not propose
as enacted
that they should be made to pay
for the delinquency and were in favor of having
nominal fine atleast on offenders.
More stop and no-parking signs
have been ordered from the auto
association and will be installed, one
more at the corner of Pine and
Commercial, one at the head of
Winter street and on eat the Methodist church corner. The no parking
,sicr in front of the court house is
to be moveu +o the opposite side of
the street but the trustees éxpress—
ed themselves as being in favor of
no parking at all in front of the .
headquarters. « The street '
alongside the Theatre is to be kept
clear. With the covering of the gutter along the’ south side of Broad .
street below Pine it is expected that:
the present practiceof the
bus backing around at the
corner
be stopped and a new bus stop drranged.
The covering of the “deep gutter
which has been a bugbear to motorists brought out a lot of discussion

The report of the audit made of
firm of
Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company
has been submitted to the Nevada
County Grand Jury and_ has been
released by F. F. Cassidy, foreman.
The prelude recites that the examination was confined to the verification of the monies collected and
disbursed and the preparation of the,
statements of receipts and disburse!
ments, Treasurer’s fund balances,
and other data. A balance sheet was
not prepared setting forth the assets,
liabilities and surplus of the Coun.
ty, as the present accounting system is, on a cash basis and does not.
provide for such records.
The total cash on hand June 30,
1926 was $183,697.12. The cash balance on June 30, 1928 was $222,-,
355.51, or an increase of nearly .
$40,000 during the;two year period.
During the past year the county
spent $6,306.43 more than it took in
while during the previous year thére ;
was an excess of receipts of;
$32,151.98. By going through the.
detailed figures below the comparison of receipts and disbursements
for the two year period may be
readily compared. ;
The tax collections, real and personal for the biennium , was but a
few hundred dollars short of a half}
‘million. Real property taxes in.
jereased nearly $2000 during 1928 ;
while personal property taxes de.
creased nearly $5000. The delinquent
tax roll in 1927 was $7,727.79 and
for 1928 it was $6,609.81.
The records show that every penny of unsecured personal property
taxes were collected during both
years by Assessor Henry C. Schroeder, amounting to $18,137.80 in
1927 and $19,110.60 the past year.
The records of Tax Collector Frank ,
Steel were examined in detail and i
found to be accurately kept and in
or George Coughlan.
The total feés collected by the
officers dropped fron!
in 1927 to $4346.69 in .
These will be found in detail 1928.
