LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19.—What
appears to be a new approach in the
search to discover the mechanism
which controls the determination of
sex in animals, has been discovered
by. Dr. A. W. Bellamy, associate professor of zoology on the Los Angeles
campus.of the University of California. Two species of small subtropical fish, which reach a length
of about two inches at maturity, are
being used by Dr. Bellamy in his
research.
“Tt appears that I ‘am. on the
threshold to an investigation which
may aid in answering the question
of what determines sex.” stated Dr.
Bellamy. ‘‘My investigations, started less than a year ago more or less
by accident, have been too brief for
me to form an opinion as to the success of the quest. I know that I have
a new definite approach to the answer to the puzzle, and I hope that
at the outcome I shall be able to
state more definitely just what it is
within these fishes and perhaps
other creatures that
sex.’’
Dr. Bellamy is using two species
of one genus of fishes. The genus
bears ithe scientific name of ‘Platypoecilus,’’ a name almost longer
than the fish itself, and which
means literally ‘‘flat fish.’ The two
species are named ‘‘maculatus” and
‘‘variatus’’. In variatus the sex-determining factors are in the male;
and in maculatus ifthe female. It
is indeed this fortunate finding of
two species with opposife types of
sex-determining mechanisms and
which interbreed freely, that makes
the investigations possible. In crossing these species, he has produced
fertile hybrids which, when crossed
back with one of the two original
species, produces nothing but males.

THE BELATED ARRIVAL
Bright flowers smiled, fruit ripened in the orchards—
I quite approved each fair, bewildering scene;
And soon I learned. of long, long years behind me,
With varying forms of life on land and. sea;
But not a thought in those unnumbered aeons
Was given to my destiny or—me!
Now I've been told that first of all a fire mist
That tides of heat and cold and unleashed cosmic fury
Prepared the land and formed the primal sea;
Again the ages rolled; and then, belated,
But all the while I was myself excluded
From every part of this stupendous plan.
Great empires rose and fell—I was not needed;
Greece lived for beauty, Rome for fame and power,
England came forth from her obscure beginning
To that rare time when knighthood was in flower;
America unfurled a starry banner,
Strong hands then bore it on from east to west,
Through wildernesses, plains and verdant valleys
To plant it on Sierra’s gleaming crest;
So many chapters of earth’s history had been written,
So many mighty battles fought and won,
So much of human effort and achievement,
Ere .my inspection tour was well begun;
That sometimes, when I’ve time for meditation,
Considering, as I scan the long ago,
How long and well the world jogged on without me,
1 feel completely humbled—don’t you know.
