_ THURSDAY, DEC. 30, 1886. IN BAD COMPANY. /. The Virginia City Daily Footlight is a thorn in the side of sage. brash journalism. Itis not only dangerously original at times, but it is as irrepressible as an exas~perated hornet. All. the other newspapers over on the sandy side of the Sierra get out of the way whenever they find it looking to‘ward them. Here is its latest @¢ scattering shot at the enemy : The Nevada City Transcript says the Footlight one of the brightest news rain the State of Nevada. I thers you. It ain’t saying much, for a weaker set and blackmailing, and slobbering, S . wes my C) are nearly all the. Nevada papers -cannot be found this side of Cocytus, But the people are to blame, They know the bunko steerers and blackmailers and ied knowingly ly patronize them. The Footlight, we are d to boast (not of its size) does not receive a sous maryedis of revenue save and except from our subscribers and advertisers, for subscriptions and advertisements, But look at”our size, and look at our advertising columns. Having nothing in the world to commend us,to popular favor but ability, integrity. and honesty, we stand completely boycotted by the mining companies, the present officers of the county _and State and the members of the bar, there not being a single advertisement of the classes mentioned in our paper. It isno wonder the Nev: press is rotten— of . river isn’t open now.”’ ae ——_ The Great Educator. — “*Young nian,’”’ said the editor of the Lost Creek Stereopticon, “you can draw. your pay and evaciate the ranch. I’ve no use} for you.” : ‘Why, what’s . the * matter now?’ gasped the new local. “That account of the BeaseleyOppendorf wedding.” .“Why Ithought I did myself proud onthat. The two families have ordered more’n a hundred] extra papers.’”. “Well, it won’t do. You headed it the ‘Beaseley-Oppendorf Wedding,’ instead of ‘Wedding Bells,’ ; © Bells! Why, there ain’t a &@ bell in the county except when a steamboat comes along, and the ‘‘Makes no difference. ‘Wedding Bells’ is the head. for marriage notices; it was there on the standing “galley, aad this office doesn’t allow aay dead capital lying around, Next thing I know you'll be saying that some citizen went to Chicago instead of ‘departed for the East.’ You can go.”’ C9 rap evaneaens StS Due to the Newspapers. . Junius Henri Browndggin Lippincott’s: We are aware that entire liberty of the press; especiallyin ademocracy like ours, must run into license. In constructing fine houses in Eastern cities, builders now pretty generally use mineral wood between the floor and ceiling. This ’ fibrous metallic substance is produced by sending a blast of air or steam through a jet of molten slag when itflows from the furnace. Having sustained the heat to fused iron, it is non-combustible and free from organic matter, so that it cannot rot or harbor any vermin. It is completerly sound-proof, and may be termed an absolute non‘conductor of heat, for a layer of one inch thickness, saya our informant, may fuse an one side while the other will remain cool. These properties, combined with its extreme lightness, have since its introduction a few years ago, as a good building material, made it & great favorite with architects and builders, and it is ‘now largely used as asound and fireproof fillcold.
