ARMY OFFICER
URGES CITIZENS
TO BE VIGILANT
In address at a dinner attended
by 175 prominent persons in Nevada
County business, professional and
civic affairs) Major H, F. Osborne
of San Francisco’s Presidio declared: “It is later than you think.’’
The dinner, sponsored by the
Business and Professional Women’s
(Club of Grass Valley took place
Wednesday night in the Bret Harte
Inn.
“Tt’s later than you think to pre‘pare the country for defense, said
Major Osborne, “to: meet a possible
invasion threat, to meet the combined efforts of fifth columnists and
sabateurs and to organize civilian
defense.”
Just what the army Delieves lies
in ‘the future Major Osborne coula
not say, ‘because of army regula‘tions, but the impression he left with
his intensely interested and attentive audience was that America might
have to defend itself sooner than
most people imagine.
The army officer said he hoped
‘tthe billions of dollars spent on na‘tional defense would be wasted.
He preferred that they be wasted in
preventing war, than put to use in
going to war.
After picturing national conditions, he brought to each individual
present his responsibilities in the
crisis confronting America, He urged everyone to keep on the alert to
find that which might strike us in
case we are not alert—the work of
the fifth column. He urged alertness,
avoidance of skepticism and a quick
response to the need of defense measures.
‘Major Osborne told his listeners
not to feel-too secure, for it may be
a false security. What has happened elsewhete can happen here, and to
prevent it, America must speed. its
defense program, both civil and military. Everyone must work for the
nation, must forget affiliations, whether Catholic or Protestant, Republican or Democrat, employer or worker. Petty jealousies must be forgotten, and Americans must obey orders,
for there is not time to explain and
‘the delays incurred by argument may
_be fatal.
“Nothing can beat us,’’ Major Osborne said, ‘if we work all for one
and forget all else.”
