OUR HEALTH. q
And Our Superfor Accommodations for Burying Other Folks.
In one of the last summer
. months the State Board of Health
showed that the death rute ia
Grass Valley was lower than in any
40wn ol its size-in the State, and
the same report showed that the
death rate of Nevada City was the
highest of any. We think plankeu streets had much to do witn
that high deaih rate. We did not
rejoice over the factof the high
deatu rate of a town in our county,
but we endeavored to show. that
the Board of Heaith had» made 4)
mistake ‘in its figure. We trieu,
to Jie our néighburing town out o)
its sickiy repulation.—iidings. ~
The Board of Health made no
mistake in its figures for that
summer month, dear ’neighbor
fidings, and what you said then,
instead of what you say now, was
andis the truth. Nevada City did
have the most burials for any
town ofits size in the State, for
the reason that this is the metropvlis in the geographical and commercial center of a large ani popuious section of country including
such places as North San Juan,
Gold Flat, North Bloomfield, Grasse
Valley, Red Dog, Graniteville and
other suburban communities.
When our provincial friends want
to bury their lamented dead in
style, instead of packing them in.o their own uiready overcrowded
cemeteries, they bring them to
the burying grounds of Nevada
City where there is ample room
tor all. We take pride in accommodating the people of other parts
of the county in this respect, and
even though the State Board oi
Health in its report charges up to.
Nevada City the number of peaple
whoare interred within her corporate limits, and not those alone
who die here, without explaining
the difference, we fret not because
we know that very few people
read those reports, and still less
people have confidence in their
correctness.

Gress Valley Mining ftems.
We get the following items from
yesterday’s Union: ©
The Omaha and Lone Jack
quartz mining properties, which
are on the same lode, have been
consolidated. The Omaha was
worked some years ago, and for a
time at a profit, but later it was
said not te be showing well, although a strong vein was opened up in the lowest southerly
jevel. The Lone Jack was once a
noted mine in the district. It was
located in 1865, and was worked
up to the year 1866, during which
time it was credited with a yield
of $500,000. :
The Coe quartz mining property was yesterday sold by the owner, E. W. Roberts, to a syndicate
of Grass Valleyans. John Robinson, Jr., the circus man had _ had
a bond upon the property, but on
account of other business engage:
ments was prevented from coming
to California to see about it, and
relinquished the bond in favor of
parties here who subscribed -the
amount of the purchase price before the expiration of the time of
the bond, which would have been
tomorrow. It is reported that the
price paid is $5,000; which is considered low, as although there is
no machinery on'the ground the
working shaft is down §00 feet,
and several levels opened, showing a strong vein of fair milling
ore.

Foothill Oranges,
A wagon load ot oranges from
the Excelsioh Water and Mining
Company’s Bonanza ranch, situated two miles below Smartsville,
were brought town yesterday,
among them be a box of the
fruit sent to the
‘Stewart, Secretary’ of the Company. They were brought up by H.
B. Jones, an experienced grower
of citrus fruits, whois shortly to
be made Foreman of the Ranch,
W. L. Fontaine, at present in
charge, being about to remove to
another part of the State. Finer
oranges were never raised anywhere. They are of large size,
entirely free from scale, bright in
color, sweet, and of delicious flavor. The orchard is four or fivé
years old, and this year’s crop,
amoanting to about 6,000, is the
first gathered. Itis now clearly
demonstrated that the foothill
country lying a few miles below
here can compete successfully with
Southern California in tlie matter
of orange growing, and we are
proud of the fact.
The *‘Mikado,”’
The management give assurance
that Gilbert & Sullivan’s opera of
the ‘‘Mikado” will be produced
at the Theatre in this vity on Friday and Saturday evenings in

the prices of admission will remain as usual, See the brightcolored bills and posters that
adorn the dead-walls of the town,

" Buffering in England.
The New York Sun says: The
opponents of silver money on this
side of the Atlantic extol the blessings of a gold standard and ascribe the depression of our buisiness affairs to the fear of silver.
Meanwhile the people of Great
Britain whose necks are under the
yoke of gold and who have. not
the faintest prospect of escape
from it, are far from enjoying
complete prosperity. Special cables present the following picture ;
Che suffering among the pvor in
London is always great and now is
said to be unprecedented. The
usual efforts of Christmas alleviations seem tu have veen paralyzed
by the immenity of the task.
Comparatively little
charity has been reported. Any
day during the past fori:uight one
could see thousands of faint, ragged wretches prowiing outside of
the wharves, each reudy to tight
the other in order vo be one of the
score who were admitted to the
day’s work ivrforty cents if a ship
happened to come in. Everywhere
business is reported to be worse
thanit was one year ago. It is
said that not a single Christian
publication has yieided a -profit.
Atths London docks less than
one-half the quantity of wine has
been taken ont of bond than was
taken out last year. The more tangible luxuries sutter ia the same
way. When it was stated one
year ago that the British, ship
building industries were off halt
a million tons it seemed the worst
showing hid passed, but the report now is likely to show ano. her
uluinution and one nearly as
reat. This is a sample of all the
industries, while farmers’ prices
have reached starvation point.

Likely as not atffirst glance the above will reveal to you nothing
but a lot of grinning darkies, which is one of the most-common things
imaginable. The second look, however, cannot fail to betray. the
true pith of the picture, which requirss no explanation. ;
And’so it is with pure old SNOWFLAKE WHISKY. At first > .
glance at the bottle you will perhaps class it as-common, ordinary ~
Whisky, of which the market is full ; but on pitting it to the test by.taking a bottle home with you and giving it a fair trial, you cannot
abe succtemne its wonderful purity, which really needs no recom_
mendation. ;
