GEL sein Gaay Cal buweuas eee edna prnaaesi cider anbius saucusdounaue $2.00 S i“ ASPECTS OF INFLATION -' Would monetary inflation solve the nation’s economic problems? California editors view the question from many angles. : _ On one point, however, they seem agreed—it would be difficult to adjust the purchasing power of money so that it would help those who need help and at the same time hold in ‘restraint those who do not need help. ; ‘“Fhere has been little financial inflation so far, in spite of all the talk about it,” remarks the Redding Courier Free _ Press. ““The government has had authority, but hasn't ‘done much about it except by suggestion. —4nflate as little as possible and hold the big cards till the last. Lately, with business groaning heavily about half way up the hill, and a new lift needed, there is more inflation talk. Something definite may be done about the dollar—though nothing that the public has not been warned of for some time.” According to the Hayward Review, “‘it is said that fears of monetary inflation and general uncertainty of monetary pollicies of the administration, have caused a drying up of sources of credit and resultant slowing down of the recovery program. industries are hesitant about borrowing, bankers aré reluctant to loan, because of inflation uncertainty. There is no. capital loan market, and it is said by financiers that without a capital loan market business cannot expand, in keeping with the NRA hopes.” 3 : oe Pientiful money would, among other things, be expected to ease the vast burden of debt, said the Berkeley Daily Gazette, adding: ‘“That debt, say friends of the plan, was nearly all assumed before the depression. For the same reason, they hold, there would be little injustice regarding savings bank deposits and insurance funds, because nearly all of them represent deposits of cheap, pre-depression dollars rather than: the dear dollar we have had recently.”’ _ “What the President fears,’’ comments the Salinas IndexJournal, “‘is that blanket inflation will immediately raise all prices. Without a corresponding increase in wages that would be a calamity. The farmers, who are among the strongest proponents of inflation, would gain nothing if they,,found that while prices of their products were rising so also were the prices of everything which they had to buy. Their position then would be relatively what it is now, and the position of the wage-earner, unless his pay check were increased, would be deplorable.”’ “It is easy enough to cry inflation,” points out the Beverly Hills Citizen, “But it is hard to adjust inflation. The first thing inflation would do would be to bolster the stock market. Even the thought of inflation last spring brought in the sheep for the summer shearing. How many of them would be clipped? How much money would again be drawn in from the country for the Wall Street vultures? It’s a delicate job, this inflation job. The President will attempt it when all other mehods fail.’’ Ore and Bullion io Licensed by State of California Established 1907 WILDBERG BROS. SMELTING-& REFINING CO.
