Good jobs to come to 5,000,000 more men.
The nation’s. business to increase by seven and a half
billion dollars.
And this statement: ‘I am confident that, assuming
sound government, economic. policies, there will be, serie,
the next five years, one of the er eatest expansigns of prod:
tion and national income in history
Who says so? It was one of foe er

Club in San Francico—the widely-read editor
Age’’, Mr. Samuel O. Dunn. ;
Whether. for sure, America will pick up the solder k kev
to those 5,000,000 jobs and that seven bilione 3 in business depends, said Mr. Dunn. But the golden key is lying there, and
he pointed it out!
It is: policies to insure restoration of the two eee durable goods industries; construction, and manufacturing for
railways. Today construction is $6,500,000,000, while ia
1929 it was 13 billions. Today manufacturing for railways is
$700.000,000, while in 1929 it was $1,400,000,000.
On the railway side of it, Mr. Dunn had some. answers.
And he should know. That is his life work. Let there be equa!
competition, he said, among all forms of transport. Let Federal and state laws not pile cost-bcosting burdens or rate
freezing edicts on one, and substitute others. No favors, no
penalties. In a word. democracy for transportation.
Government, of course, is merely the voice of the people. If they take that attitude, Mr. Dunn said, the railways will
get enough business to do the huge “heavy goods’” buying of
steel and cars and such, to help open the door to those millions of jobs and billions in national income.

The golden key, thy expert says, is lying there. The
question is whether or n8t America will pick it up.
