EDITORIAL
Last year the Nevada City high
school joined.the Central California
Public Speaking League. This league
is composed of high school students
situated in the central part of the
staie. Friday of last week our negative team traveled to Escalon to
debate with the high school team. of
that city. The affirmdtive team met
the Manteca. team at our high school.
Debating should be encouraged
and supported by the people of the
community as a good debating team
recognition from
basketball
receives as much
outsiders as a winning
team. As this is only the second
year that we have debated, and we
had only one debate last year, we
eannot estimate the power of our
speakers but we will give them our
support.
The main purpose of debating is
but in the benenot in. the winning
fit to the debater gained through
his study and work. The debater
develops his reasoning power and his
public speaking ability. Debating
develops inter-school communication
among schools as the debaters travel
to the different towns.
Therefore, as a debating team is
a benefit to the high school and to
the community, we should back them
as much as we back -our. other
school activities. :

TEAM ENTERS LEAGUE
Coach Pederson has placed the
““A’’ basketball team into a Hoop
League at Grass Valley. He did this
because he thinks ‘the team will be
up against ‘strong teams in this
Hoop League, which will give them
practice before’ the conferenee
games.

and affirmative teams of the Nevada .
City high school. The question for
debate is: ‘Resolved, that the
canning peach growers of California
should own and operate their own
canneries” 30th sides gave very
good arguments, the rebuttals being
especially good. On the affirmative
side were Nancy Jones and Alberta
Baker. On the negative sides were,
Pierson Tuttle and Helen Chapman.
This was merely preparatory for the
debate between Nevada City and
Escalon.

GEADOW LAKE MINING —
During the past year the Meadow
Lake mining district north of Cisco
in. Nevada county came into some
prominence again after a lapse of
many years and it is probable that
with new developments’ in milling
methods which have made it possible to handle rebellious ores with
a greater degree of efficiency, that
the Meadow Lake _ section will see
some of its old glory return.
Due to limitations of early methods of extraction the. development
work of the district was confined entirely to the uppers oxidized zone,
the deepst shaft being 137 feet. At
ithis level the vein in the~Excelsio:
i claim is ten feet wige showin;
values from 12-to 20 dollars pe:
ton, indicating further that an in,crease in values with depth may be
.
1 expected, due to secondary enrich’
ment. Numerous open cuts, shallow
glory holes and shafts on the vari
ous veins have demonstrated thé
continuity of the veins and _persistence of gold and silver values ‘in
the upper oxidized zone.
All, reports on the Meadow Lake
district are agreed as to the extensive ore bodies and average
values. The reason early operations
-were suspended was not for the lack
of ore but for the lack of a method
of extraction applicable to the large
tonnage of low grade complex sulphide ores encountered below the
oxidized zone. Metallurgical. science
has made great strides since 1870
~vhen the Meadow Lake mine were
abandoned, and it is the opinion of
certain competent metallurgical enzineers that by the application of
‘mproved methods of. gold and silver
extraction and the extensive ore
jy bodies of the Meadow Lake District
offer an opportunity for developing
. large and profitable production.
The application of the Vandercock
mercuric cyanide process will be
vaiched with a great deal of inter‘st. It is a modifieation of the
‘tandard method of cyaniding gold
ind silver ores. This system provides
means of preventing the fouling
f the cyanide solutions which orinarly takes place when treatng
omplex ores as found in the Mea‘ow Lake district. This. fouling of
‘olutions is prevented.by the introluction. of a mercuric. generator
Xhich keeps the cyanide solutions
‘ree of harmful imopurities so that
heir dissolving efficiency is kept
it a maximum. Mr. Vandercock, who
las made a number of labratory
ests on Meadow Lake ores statés
hat he has found he could make
n extraction of 91 to 94 per cent
f the gold values.
