Sinclair, an honest, but: deluded and impractical dreamer. is not a man to trust in the pilot house in the present crisis. Merriam, backed by extremely wealthy and selfish groups, has seemed to us a greater threat to peace and adjustment to changing conditions, than Sinclair and his absurd Epic. For Merriam has rarely voted for any ‘measure would not promote the interests of his wealthy friends. this campaign huge sums have been -spent to elect him ~ “A HEART FO ~e that ¢ should be even more serviceable ‘to those whose money elected him, if he is ‘elected, than it has been in other offices he has held. His very name chalienges the radical following of Sinclair as well as all forward looking citizens of the state of progressive or liberal leanings. Trouble looms large on the State horizon with such aman as Merriam in office. _ The safe course, it has seemed to us, would be to elect Raymond L. Haight, Progressive candidate. opponents are Native Sons. Both have come tressing political experiences in other states. ie allegiance here after disBut Haight, born and reared in California, has not only the education and: upbringing that a governor of California should have, but he alone has been careful to prepare a sound, feasible and constructive program for caring for the unemployed, for rehabilitating the state’s depleted Exchequer, and for readjusting the tax burden. . Nothing has occurred during the campaign to cause us to reconsider this argument. If he is defeated it will be due to a shirking of the real issue here presented by a large number of voters, who are moved by one consideration alone, that of expediency. But whatever befalls at the polls tomorrow’ we know that the people of the great state of California, will carry on. If election be held today, he would be defeated by a greater majority. What the situation tionable. may There is’ one point keep in mind. A great deal of the support ‘given Sinclair during the eatly part of the campaign was: by people who are not to be classed as ithe unemployed; people who _ honhis sincerity the situation in this people principally whose sympathies ‘estly believe in and ability to improve California. It is class of have been swung away from Sinclair by the flood of pamphlets, newspaand radio publicity and other propaganda disseminated by the opi position. per It is this same class of voters whose sympatihies and support may very conceivably back ton: Sinclair when it time to vote. It is indeed, asking too much of the average citizen, to expect that he should thoroughly analyze and correctly solve the questions of policy involved in this campaign. @n these questions, experts who have given years of study to these things cannot -agree. The average voter in deciding who will get his support is influenced by what he reads and hears. In the present the flood of propaganda has been so tremendous, the accusations and deswing comes campaien, nunciations so malicious that, unless it has been very accurately timed, it may defeat its own purpose. Among the unemployed, especially in Southern’ California; solid support of Sinclair is conceded. This other group however, which includes farmers, small property owners etec., and whose support-is necessary if Sinclair can win, may very possibly throw their. support back to him. The unnecessary violence with which the campaign has been wagSome people are bound to question if a man could be as black as Sinclair has been painted, and when this doubt arises, the sympathies of many will revert back to him. Mass psychology is a funny thing and we are witnessing a demonstration of mass psychology at its best in this struggle. If Sinclair's opponents timed their propaganda right, he will be defeated. If they unloosed their barrage too early, he may still possibly be elected. FRATERNAL AND . CLUB DIRECTORY . . WOMAN'S CIVIC CLUB .
