He felt poorly when he went te work Sunday evening, but despite this fact he continued to labor as usual all night. Short1} after he went home next morning he went to bed suffering much, and gradually grew worse up to the time of his death. Mr. Hurst was a hative of Baden, Germany, and , when only about five years old, came.to America with his parents who séttled in New Orleans, Louisiana: Tn 1850 he came to Nevada City and was engazed awhile in mining. Kimball, Director-General of the United States Mints, we find that the gold productions of California for the fiscal year ending June 30th, 1885, was only $13,600,000, as against $16,600,000 for the previous fiscal year, showing a falling off-of $3,000,000. This production included the clean-up of the bedrock’ from the! North Bloomfield, Milton and_ other mines enjoined by Judge Sawyer. Since the end of the fiscal vear of 1885 this source of gold supply has been cut off; and now ' the Eureka Lake Company, one of the largest producersin Nevada county, has discharged its force, ceased operations and thrown many men out ofemployment. This will tell on the gold product for the calender year 1885, as will soon be shown by the annual statement of Wells, . Putar Nicwoxs, for a long time a well known resident of Dutch Flat, is at the point of death from lung disease. . He is in San Francisco being doctored. A rew clouds that hung in the heavens here and there yesterday morning indicated that there was no telling what tack the weather might take next. Cte Joun Rarrer, Peter McGovern 1860, when with F. Stumpf and she being his third wife. He has occupied the building where he was doing business at the time cf his death since 1868. He leaves a wife, three daughters, a son, a stepdaughter (Mrs. J. J. Jackson) and a step-son (‘Thomas Sharp.) He was the oldest member of Pennsylvania Engine Company, No. 2, and had served one term as Chief Engineer of the City Fire Department. He also belonged to the Red Men, the American Legion of Henorand the Chosen Friends. His life: was insured in the Legion of Honor for $5,000, and in the Chosen Friends for $3,000. He had also carried for some time a policy in the insurance branch of the Red Men, but it is doubtful if his heirs realize anything from that. John Hurst was a straight-forand favorably for “thirty ‘years or more. The time and place of holding the funeral have not yet been -defiinitely announced, but it will probibly take place Sunday afternoon from the Congregational Church. till Opening :Postponed. Capurro & Co. received a telegram from the manufacturer’s agents Wednesday evening saying that the Star skat:s ordered~for the Nevada City Skating Academy would not be here till _Saturlay evening. Consequently it has been necessary to postpone the opening of the Academy till Tuesday-evening next; the monthly meeting of the military company being heldin the Hall Monday night. This isno greater disappointment to the public than it is to the proprietors who have been crowding work at the Hall for several days past so as to have. the floor and everything else in readiness to open this evening. Governor Stoneman is in receipt of the following letter, dated at Howard City, Montcalm county, Mich., November 17th: ‘‘To His Excellency, the Governor of California: I beg leave to ask a few questions in regard to a relative, Levi Butts. He has been in Califorpia some ten years. Word has just reached us, in a roundabout way, that he was sentenced! and hanged some time ago. Not knowing what was his exact location or’ business pursuits I take this method of inquiry, hoping you can give that the above may be the Butts who was hung in this .county a iew years ago. It is ‘not probable. George Butts was executed at this city Oct. 1st, 1879, for killing Wm. Roberts at Forest Springs sept. 6th, 1879. George was born . in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1834, ind came to this State in 1852 or thereabout. Ladies Ask Your Friends.
