NEWLOW COST
IN OPERATION OF
STATE VEHICLES
SACRAMENTO, Nov. 5.—Cost of
operating gutomobiles nd motorcycles by the Department of Motor
Vehicles has set a low record, according to Inspector ‘M. F. Brown,
of the California Highway Patrol,
who is in charge of all motor equipment for the department.
Automobiles are operated for
.0227 cents per mile and motor cyeles for .0119 cents per mile, according to the report of equipment
costs and operation. These costs include’ every item covering’ these
vehicles, original cost, trade in
credit, all repairs and maintenance.
In forwarding the report to Director Ingels, Brown po‘hted out
that the costs have been reduced
nearly one half in a period covering
the last five years.
These figures reveal a saving of
approximately $125,000 annually on
the basis of mileage costs of 5 years
ago.
On June 30, 1936, there were 226
cars in operation which showed that
they had travelled’ 12,239,674 miles,
over a period of about two years,
while 464 motorcycles had 13,786,-.
125 miles to their credit.
The department uses 14 makes
and various models of automobiles
which have an average life of 2 1-2
years with average mileage of 80,000.
Motorcycles are given a maximum
life of 50,000 miles.
“This extremely low cost is a rea:
record the country over, I believe,”’
said Inspector Brown. “Inquiries
from similar organizations show our
costs to be lowest as far as. I have
been able to determine.
“Regular servicing and inspection
of equipment and keeping it at the
highest point of efficiency are the
reasons’ for our splendid showing.’’
Talking It Over
“Why is the silence so profound?”’ said Jeremiah Slade,
“Our great campaign has joined the past,’’ the tired
voter said;
‘The oratory fails and dies
To the last quavering shout,
And now we voters ask ourselves,
“What was it all about’ >”’
“Why did you stage the ballyhoo?” said Jeremiah
Slade,
‘Oh, there was method in it all,’’ the tired voter said;
“When outs are out and ins are in,
There never is a doubt,
That outs will do their level worst
To put the ins to rout.”
“How do you start the beastly row?” said Jeremiah
Slade,
“Oh, that’s a very simple thing,” the tired voter said;
**Ye editors shed pools of ink,Bands blare and banners fly,
So, casting reason to the winds,
We raise a hue and-cry.”’ .
‘‘How can your leaders stand the gaff?”’
Slade,
“Oh, they’re es pectinia what they get,’
said;
“From Washington to Franklin D.
Each one has fared the same,
It’s just a clever strategy
To blast a rival’s fame.”
“But how do you reward these men?”’
Slade,
“Oh, Father Time attends to that,”’ tthe tired voter said;
“We set them up and cast them down,
But seasons swiftly fly,
And each man gets his honest dues
In history’s by and by.”
‘‘And is the ruckus over now?” said Jeremiah Slade,
“Oh, yes, we're normal once again,’’ the tired voter said;
‘The victors soon forget their glee,
The vanquished hide their pain;
But after four long years, you bet,
We'll start the show again!”

‘CARVER SUPERVISOR
Defeated in the race for supervisorship of the second (Alleghany)
Thomas
Davies, incumbent, ends a term that
began when he was appointed to the
office by the late Governor Rolph to
fill the vacancy left by George
Campbell, deceased. The vote went
in favor of Elton (Spec) Carvin
176-147. It is not thought that the
32 absent voters ballots, yet uncounted, will change the result. In
August primaries of 1934 Davies and
Ed Breuning receieved top vote in
a contest in which theré were-several candidates and at the November
election each received the same number of votes: The .count of absent
voters’ ballots then gave the office
to Davies by four votes. Tuesday’s
election was for the full term of
four years.
With the first meeting of the
Board of Supervipors in January
there will be two new members, Attilio Lombardi of Loyalton, and <arvin. Lombardi defeated Chatrman

as a write-in candidate.

CCC BOYS PLANT PINE
SEEDS IN BURNED AREA
Ten crews of 100 CCC boys in ik
Tahoe National Forest started plant=
ing pine tree seeds in the burned
area at Forest Hill east of Auburn
yesterday. The big fire this fall
burned over about 2300 acres. Mr.
C. W. Corson, of the Susanville nursery, came down Wednesday and is
assisting in giving instructions on
planting the pine tree seed.
Lookouts at the different stations
in the Tahoe National Forest on the
west side of the Sierra Nevada
mountains were called in just af
