CALIFORNIA HAS
MUCH BIG GAME
SACRAMENTO, Nov. 7.—€GP—
California ranks fourth among the
states in the number of big game anthe borders, according
S. fish and
imals within
to a survey by the U.
ildlife service.
Of more than 5,800,000 such animals in the United States, California has an estimated 502,485. The
three most numerous species in the
state are mule deer 283,492. Columbia biack tailed deer 187,349, and _
black bear 16,280.
(California Was the second
black bears, being Ted only by Washington state with 17,400, and has
more desert bighorn sheep than any
othet state, with a total count of
°000. The state has 200 wild boars, '
ranking third for that species.
The figures were based on the,
third nation wide big game inventory
eonducted by the fish and wild life
service with the cooperation of federal, state and private agencies.
Forty per cent of the big game
animals are on federal land and 60
per cent on state and private lands.
The present figures, compiled for
the year 1939 ,are 201,000, or 3.4
per cent less than the estimated big
game population for 1938, but officials of the federal agency said the
difference is insignificant and does
not necessarily represent a decrease
in game species.
Some of the apparent losses are
known to be due to corrections of
certain estimates in the 1938 inventory, while others may be due to
more conservative estimates, the report stated.
Leading the states in big game is
Michigan, with a total of 839,800
animals, 835,000 of which are white
tailed deer. Pennsylvania is second
with 827,300; ‘Wisconsin third with
513,300, and Minnesota, following
California, in fifth place with 461,200.
Among species; white tailed deer
lead the list with 3,578,000 reported in 44 states. (Next most numerous
are mule deer, totaling nearly 1,400,000 in 17 states; Columbian
black tailed deer, with a population
of 501,200 in three states and elk,
. 01,300 in 28 states.
The smallest population in the big
game inventory is credited to the;
wooldand caribu, only 15 of which
were reported—all in Minnesota.
