-. Cross-Currents .
The American housewife, mistress of the nation’s buying, today finds herself, in an embarrassing predicament.
It the same predicament that tantalizes the harassed politician, turns the heads of economists gray, and makes the
wage-earner wonder why his paycheck disappears like butter
under the sun. Even one of the country’s shrewdest analysts,
John T. Flynn, admits that the cross-currents of wages and
prices, crashing against the beleagured housewife at market
and her husband at work, creates a topsy-turvy picture today.
Every good housewife wants her husband to get a good
wage, but she doesn’t want it gobbled out of her purse at the
market place. At present both things are happening. Wages
are advancing, but galloping several! strides ahead are the
Prices. = :
The politicians, possibly trying to unravel this tangled
skein, have helped complicate the works with price ‘fixing
regulations. Whatever its value in theory, in practice—where
it hurts most!—all the regulation has been UP and not down.
One big merchandising concern is now in court for refusing
to make as big a profit as a price-fixing law orders it to!
Where a dealer was once satisfied to sell an article for
53c, a price-fixing law now enables the manufacturer to compel that dealer to sell the same article at 79c. The housewife,
in her wrath at such political mismanagement, may well pray
for relief from its manipulations!
Out of the confused currents of lagging wages and rising costs, this much plainly emerges: price-fixing to entosre .
higher prices eventually reduces purchasing. When less is
purchased, less is produced, industries slow up, and jobless

with pleasure, mirth and affection, at the antics of the five little girls on their playground. These were real, honest-to-goodness youngsters of flesh and blood, and not the shadowy figures of the laboratory studies and charts.
There was Emilie making a sand pie, and Cecil® furiously riding her velocipede with a red wagon tied on behind, and

set up a make-believe store counter.
Proud and pleased as parents, the educators agreed the

Quints’ Triumph . .
The Dionne quintuplets have just made another conguest!
Over two hundred sober-sided biologists, psychologists;
and educators recently assembled in Toronto to read solemn
ientific papers on the quints and discuss, in potent three and
our syllable words, just what science has found out about
these youngsters.
No doubt, these educators enjoyed each other's dissertations on environment, growth, and personality factors, but
judging from al! reports the scientists’ real fun didn’t begin
till they arrived at Callander. « 4

A penny bank will pay the difference between ordinary lighting in your home and scientifically correct
better light for better sight.
For better lighting today is both sensibly reasonable as well as scientifically right. Modern lamps
are without fussy, frilly shades that subdue light.
Modern lamps instead have light-colored shades that
are open at the top and set on higher stands to give
light a chance to diffuse throughout a room.
More than a half million Better Sight lamps were
sold last year. Persons who use them say there is
nothing like them. These lamps do give more light,
without glare, and for just a few pennies more a day
than ordinary light that so often causes squinting
and eyestrain.
