Jack Cooper of Sacramento is
spending a vacation with his mother,
Mrs. R. B. Farley, in Nevada City.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert C. Austin returned to their home in San Francisco. Wednesday after spending two
weeks vacationing in Nevada and Sierra counties. Mr. Austin was at the
Ruby mine between Forest and Downieville for a time. They also visited
Mr, Austin’s mother, Mrs. Ella: M.
Austin, county superintendent of
schools at the National Hotel.

preparing to open a mine in Plum
Valley which is located on the ridge
road several miles south of Alleghany.

driver of the fire.truck at the city
hall and resumed his duties Tuesday. Ray Wilde, Sr. has been subStituting for him while he was away.

Mrs. Frank McCaslan of North
Bloomfield most delightfully entertained at a bridge luncheon at Bret
Harte Inn in Grass Valley Wednesday afternoon. The dainty luncheon
was served at cne o’clock and some
time was spent playing cards. High
score was made by Mrs. Frank Meggers, North. Bloomfield, and Mrs.

Farquhar is superintendent of the
University of California Press, and
was guest speaker of the Rotary club
meeting yesterday.
Mr. and Mrs. JohnBortsch and
family of Moonshine Valley arrived
last evening and are spending today
visiting Mrs. Bortsch’s parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Lee Day.
Lee Day, who has been employed
under Contractor Howard Ross on
the Memorial Building at Portola
for some time, has returned to his
home in Nevada City.
Carl Tobiassen, Jr., who is attending University of Nevada, Reno,
spent last week end at home in this
city. He suffered-a knee injury a
short time ago while playing football but has fully recovered.
An extensive sealing job on the
Tahoe Ukiah highway east of Nevada
City is making rapid progress. Eight
inches of sealing is being spread on
the highway. The Hillard Construction company has the contract.
Mrs. Raymond Halkyard. of the
Blue Tent district entertained members of the Harmony Ridge club at
a most delightful afternoon affair

HIGH SCHOOL
NOTES

The Nevada City High School Student Body secretary, Phil Angove,
Stated today that 119 people had
paid their student body fees and had
become members receiving student
body cards. This is almost half of
the high school enroliment. The
ecards allows students to enter all
athletic eames played here free, ‘to
attend most class dances free and be
admitted to the theaters at a reduced rate. So every student body member is well repaid for his fee in privileges.
AID FOR STUDENTS
N. Y. A. (National Youth Administration) has been started again at
the Nevada City. high school. This
gives members of the student body
the chance to earn money to pay for
student body fees, work books and
other school necessities. They are
paid by the hour for doing work
which will be for the advantage of
the school. N. Y. A. has been earried
on for two previous years and has
been a successful project and an aid
to the students who need the extra

NEW EQUIPMENT
The boys at the Nevada City high .
school have received some new .

new football suits, new shoulder
pads, four new helmets for the field}

added attraction for the games a
rooters’ club has been organized in
which the members will wear «the
school colors and guarantee to be at
all games to cheer for their team.
Ginger Paxon and June Bennett were
instrumental in organizing the club
and they feel sure it will be a success. It will have its first meeting
today at an assembly, pep rally held
for the coming game.

DOWNIEVILLE, Sept. 30.—Last
Saturday night while returning from
a dance at Vinton, the automobile
driven by Fred Hansen of Sierra City
struck whatwas believed to have
been a deer in the middle of the road
way about four miles above ‘Sierra
City.

While attempting to back up
the car went off the
grade anr rolled over approximately
six times before coming to rest on
the steep sidehill. i
The occupants of the machine,
Miss Gladys Hansen and Mary Ellen
and Harry
all of Sierra City, luckily escaped serious injury. Miss Hansen
sustained a cut on the leg that required two stitches to close, Miss
Dugan a gash on the forehead, a
bruised eye and other contusions,
while Hansen and Maily escaped
with minor cuts and bruises.
After a wait of about twenty minutes. after they had climbed back to
the highway, they were picked up
and taken to Sierra City by W. Neal
of that place, and then brought to
Downieville for medical attention.

Sixteen Years Old
CAMPTONVILLE, Sept. 30.—Miss
Dorothy Olive Hays celebrated her
sixteenth birthday last Thursday at
the home of her grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. M. G. Calvin, on Main
street, the event being commemorated by a chicken dinner prepared by
her grandmother, Mrs. Calvin. Those
in attendance included: Mr. and
Mrs. Eugene H. Hays and Mrs. Ella
Hays from Browns Valley, Mr. and
Mrs. M. G. Calvin, Miss Dolores Bishop, Mrs. Leonard L. Bishop, Jackie Bishop, and Miss Dorothy O.
Hays. A very happy reunion and enjoyable day was spent.
