LEGION AND VFW
AGREE ON AWARD
An agreement has ‘been reached
between Nevada Countty’s two Veteran’s organizations, the American
Legion and the Veterans of Foreign
Wars that’in the annual Americanism
award that the Legion will represent Grass Valley and the VFW Nevyada City.
The Award of Merit is made at
graduation exercises in June in each
high school to the student making
the outstanding contribution to good
citizenship and Americanism during
hig or ther senior year. One of the
primary objectives of the Legion and
the VFW is community welfare and
the Award of Merit is eagerly sought
in open student competition.

Stars shot over Nevavda City -and
Grass Valley last night, too. In
spite of a bright moon a huge scale
4th of July fireworks display was
enioyed by hundreds locally.
The show was put on by the Comet
Giacobini-Zinner and is caused by
the comet growing old as the centuries go by. As age sets in particles
ranging in size from scecks of dust
to clumps of iron and stone as big as
a house break away and are strewn
along the comet’s path.
Albout every six years the weary
old cémet geta pretty close to Mother Earth. Last night Giacobini-Zinner was only 131,000 miles away—
the distance from Broad to Com-mercial as astronomical mileage 16

friends in that community. ,
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Dudley, pioneer Columbia Hill residents, ‘he was born in Columbia Hill
and lived in Columbia Hill, North
Bloomfield and Nevada City until
four years ago when he moved to
Sacramento.
He married Eliza Curnow of Columibia Hill and the couple

‘or many years he was postmaster and operated the Mobley store
in North Bloomfield until he became
supervisors from the 3rd_ district
which he held for four terms, or -16
years.
After his resigniation as member
of the Board of Supervisors, he was
appointed County Welfare Officer,
a post he held until 1942 when
resigned and went to Sacramento
where he had been working with
the U, S. Postal Department until
recent months when ill health foreed
his retirement.
He was well known throughont
the county, always taking an active
part in civic activities and being an
accomplished musician as well.
