Southern California realizing that atmosphere meant real
money manufactured it out of thin air, while Northern California, with plenty, made ducks and drakes cf it. Now we are
justly criticised as witness the following editorial which appeared in the Los Angeles Times of Sunday, October . 1th,
hich was kindly sent to us by Edward Poorman of San Jacinto, a Northern California booster, even though he chooses to
live in the southern part of the state.
_ Within the last five days . have wandered pretty well over
the State of California.
Two things impress me; that this country is so much in
need of rain that it will be ina bad way unless Gin Chow's
predictions for an October rain come true; also that Northern
California has a pitifully inadequate idea of how to sell itself
to the public.

EGGS AND SUCH
Asa matter of fact, it has more romance and color and
charm than we have; but they keep it like a lodge secret. The
local secretaries of the chambers of commerce pass out an
endless series of pamphlets. telling you how many board feet
are in a red wood tree, and how many _ eggs the hens of Petaluma lay; but they. seldom know anything about the history
of their own towns. Southern California is the only part of this
State which realizes the commercial value of a romantic
~ background.

GIRL GUIDES
It would pay the Redwood Empire Association to take a cue
from the Fred Harvey system and install girl guides to preside
over the information bureaus.
These girl guides in Santa Fe, New Mexico, constitute the
‘ most remarkable system of the kind in the world. They are all
university graduates. Most of them are daughters of pioneer
families and they are letter perfect on New Mexico. Before they
are put on the pay roll they go through a year of probation.
They are required: to master 50,000 specific questions. They
