e _ Nevada City Neaiget 305 Broad Street. Phone 86 A Le Newspaper; as defined by statute. lished at Nevada City. Printed and Pub-' fi. M> LETTE and C: B. ANDERSON:..2...0220 Publishers One year, Published semi-weekly, Monday and Friday, at Nevada City, California, and entered as mail matter of the second class in the postoffice at Nevada City, under Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. SUBCRIPTION RATES —, i WEEKLY . COMMENT — --ane ee sereeeneeensaee seeeestee em By CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN . With the family I went hunting wild grapes one day last week. We had a good time what with picnicing and all that went with it. We found a few of them but not enough for the grape jelly appetite worked wp during the hunt. .We stopped at. Eden’s along the road and there we bought some delicious tame-grapes and some fine. apples and also ordered a gallon of apple cider which will coming along at a: ~~vater date. We had the time of our lives and especially the kiddies. I guess the farmer in most of us will come to the surface when the proper, inspiration is found. There: is one curve in the road to Sierra City, just as it leaves, Downieville city limits that is saucered just right for speed and one can safely ‘“‘Barney Oldfield’’. this curve to the hearts content—and did we do it. Regardless of the advantage or disadvantage to this or to that business there seems to be only one logical street to be used as the state highway through town, that’is, Sacrathénto street: The’ other street under consideration is entirely too narrow; with no possibility for widening without a great deal of expense; at*a’ time when money is not too plentifu.l. t , Any town that has dniounted to Anything (no matter what size) has ‘6ften had some man whose big ideds thave helped more than anything else to make the town grow. Denver had one man who practically made ihe town and was its mayor. The man’ Ss name was Speer. Nevada City has its opportunity— Now as never before to be a big “Tittle, city of the mountain. region. But Nevada City. does not need to ;think that she can do all of these things without having. an influx of new people, for that is just what iv takes to make a city. You know I told you about some wild grapes we got this week. Well, we made jelly of them today and we had good luck, ~ beautiful in color and nice to eat, due to the good wife’s ability. Hitler looms large in the -headlines these days. His talk convinces me that he is a great man in himself. I am not speaking of his methods, only of the man himself. He appears to be literally burning up with patriotism. It is hard to disassociate Hitler and the Germany of today from the Germany of Kaiser Bill’s time. Fali trme makes me think of the little town in Illinois where I went to high school. For one mile on one side of the main artery road, into the town there Was a row of walnut trees set very close together. At this time of year these trees had lost their leaves but they were not more beautiful at any time of the year. For the nuts were ripe and we went there with clubs and bags to get our share, Yes, and in the same town we rented a five room house and f@ half acre of land for five dollars per month, raised our own potatoes and all the vegetables we needed. Milik at 10 cents a gallon, still we had a hard time to hea along. “ant . The “Eagle Bird” mine near the little town of Washington, under the management of J. W. Still,-is making satisfactory progress. The headframe is practically complete ‘and this morning the first steps toward sinking ‘the incline shaft. ,to deeper levels were taken. Twenty men. are employed and work is proprogressing on the skipway. : Mr; and Mrs. Roy. Howell left Saturday for their home in the bay district after spending the summer at their. mining property on White Cloud east of Nevada City.
