OF BIRTHDAY TO
CAPT. NIBELL
Capt. George A. Nihell, owner of
the Deer
east of Nevada City, celebrated his
78th birthday Wednesday. October
14, Several friends and relatives
were present to enjoy a_ delicious
chicken dinner. ee
He was born in Illinois and came
to Nevada City with-his parents in
1863, just after a fire had’ practically destroyed the city. He has made
this city his home ever since. Mr.
Nihell took. up the trade of mill‘wright and was sometimes called ‘to
Nevada. state to set up mills. He
has been superintendent of several
mines, the Oden, just back of Sugar
Loaf mountain; Brunswick, near
Grass Valley; Summit, now Live
Yankee, south of Nevada City and
spent two years re-opening the Murchie mine, when Hoff and Price took
over the property, nine years ago.
Capt. Nihell also has an ore buyers’ license and buys gold. He states
most of the gold is coming from the
Middle Yuba river and Deer Creek.
There are about six families’ at You
‘Bet that sell him gold. He remem‘bers when You Bet was~a town of
ried mail and passengers between
Nevada City and You Bet. In some
instances at You Bet today whole
families pan gold, each child, mother and father keeping their gold separate and bringing it to Nevada City
to sell.
When asked about the . largest
pocket of gold he had ever seen, he
stated it was in the National mine
at Graniteville years ago. It was almest all jewelry rock and $5000 in
gold was placed in a. little candle
box to bring out. Fred Searls, engineer: for the Newmont interests,
is now reopening the old Republic
mine just across the mountain from
the National, closed years ago. The
National Guard, Company C, Nevada
Light Guard, was organized in 1863
