Paying an Election Bet.
Tomorrow afternoon an elahorate
dinner for ten will be served at the
National Hotel under Stewarl Hyer’s
direction. E.: J. Rector, chairman of
the Democratic County Central Committee, will foot the bill. The reason
he is accorded this privilege arices.
from te fact that he made a bet of
such a dinner on the outcome of the
late Presidential election. Had Cleveland been re-elected Henry Lane
would have been under the -painful
necessity of paying for the spread.

Tellthe Whole Truth.
Democrats are making merry over
the announcement that General Harrison did not carry his own county.
They, however, carefully neglect to
mention that he carried his own State,
and he carried. Old Band:ana’s State,
Cleveland’s State and his county and
city and ward. When a witness goes
onthe stand so gleefully he should
state the truth and the whole trath,
and nothing but the truth.
Deputy Sheriff Curter Departs.
John H. Carter.on Monday evening
resigned his position as Deputy Shgriff
and Jailor, turned the Keys of the j:il
over to Sheriff Lord at that official’s

cars at the latter place to go to San

prominent citizens of the county recommending him to parties in San

The management have not denied
that there has been just cause for

some instances, but it was unavoida™

in Chicago, who is not only familiar
with the laws of California on the subject, but has had some practice in
that State. We submitted to him the

our opinion has been contirmed by
him as to their correctness and regularity. Such opinion was also expressed by another lawyer, sent to look
into the matter, and who examined
the papers.
Regarding the price of land, from
the time the office was firat opened to
the public, when it was given out that
ali persons joining the colony would
be sold the land at $75 an acre with

He may offer inducements for large

land to a person who will make certain improvements. There is no law
in Culifornia preventing a person from
giving away that which is his own.
They say the promoters got their land
for less than $75 an acre. Admitting
they did, is it any of their business?
‘The promoters have been at considerable expense sending parties all over
California to find a suitable location ;
incurred financial risks ; have had considerable expense and trouble since
then. If they did not pay $60 or $75
