SMALL TOWN LIFE
In a big, dynamic city
There’s. a fascination—true!
There is much that’s fine and pretty,
There is Life, of every hue!
There’s a certain charm about it
That imparts to Life a zest—
And the small towns are without it—
Still, I like the small town best.
There is not the chance-for riches
ILLEGAL PASSENGER CARRIERS BE INVESTIGATED
At a conference called by the railroad commission recently, four departments of the state government
the railroad commission, state board
of equalization, California highway
patrol and labor commission, agreed
that some co-ordinated effort should
be made to rigidly enforce all laws
relating to the tse of the highway by
€arriers operating for compensation.
The conference was limited to the
discussion of ‘‘wild cat’’ passenger
service. It was called because of recent amendments to state laws.

When a motor balks the cause may
Sometimes be traced to an old gas

tap has a vent to allow air to reach
the tank. After years of service the
vent may become choked with rust
or dirt, causing the car to stall or
' buck, particularly on a long pull.

NEGLECTED CARS LOSE
50 PERCENT EFFICIENCY
(Many cars are operating at an efficiency of about 50 per cent normal
when an occasional trip to a service
station or repair shop would save
money for the owner and add to the
pleasure of driving, declares the free
emergency road service of the California State Automobile association.
Various inexpensive pieces of work,
such as replacing the leaky ignition
wires, grinding valves ,and adjusting
carburetor, add to efficiency and reduce wear and tear.
HER OWN LOOKOUT
A nervous old lady was buying a
portable radio set.
“Now, do you definitely assure me,”
; She asked, looking anxiously at the
instrument, “that I gshan’t get a
shock?” :
“Madam,” said the assistant impressively. “I do definitely assure you
that you won’t get a shock—until you
hear some of the programs.”
Groping
“A number of constituents are waiting to see you,” said the able and discreet secretary.
“What do they say?” asked Senator
Sorghum. :
“That something is wrong.”
“What do they want me to do
about it?”
“They don’t know. That’s what they
want you to tell them.”

Daring
“In 1800, a fashionable yvroman’s
costume weighed no more than eight
ounces,” says a writer fn Harper’s Ba“Greek looking garments which
Sliic open to as high as the hip, were
worn over flesh tights, all underwear
having been discarded. The result of
such folly was what doctors of the
period described as muslin diseases,
otherwise catarrhal complaints, “A reeord exists stating that during the winter of 1803 alone 60,000 women suffered from what was nething else but
consumption.”

. Ancient Roman Racketeer
Dr. William Stearns Davis, the late
historian, dug up from the records of
ancient Rome a man whose ideas were
dozeus of centuries ahead of his time,
He was Crassus, a wealthy real estate operator. His racket was this:
He drilled a score or so of ‘his
slaves as fire fighters. Then, picking
out a handsome villa, he would have
one of his mob set fire to it. As the
flames mounted Crassus would appear
and make a small offer for what
looked like a total loss. At the owner’s word “Sold,” Crassus’ visiting firemen would rush out of the shrubbery
and save the property—New York

‘deteriorates and may be the cause
of a long roadside delay if not replaced.
