A California gold ore that readily responded to flotation gave 96 per cent concentration without sodium silicate and on the addition of one and three pounds of sodium silicate gave only 86.2 and 84.3 per cent; respectively. In the milltng of another California ore, sodium silicate was added to deflocuate the slime to aid in its removal by classification before flotation. The bureau of mines experiments show 95 per cent concentration of gold without sodium silicate and 89 per cent with the addition of 2 pounds of sodium silicate. A Nevada gold ore, showing high acidity due to the alteration of pyTite, gave almost the same good concentration with and without sodium silicate up to three pounds per ton. On another Nevada ore containing has high absorbent properties, flotation is benefitted about 10 per cent by the addition of sodium silicate up to two pounds per ton. Bach ore should be considered for its particular problem. USE OF HEAVY LIQUIDS Heavy liquids are becoming wellknown in laboratories for dissecting ores, and their ability to separate heavy mineral from light gangue has brought them recognition in the commercial field. In the cooperative work between the Mississippi valley experiment station of the United States bureau of mines, Rolla, Mo., and the Missouri school of mines and metallurgy,.a process using heavy liquids has been considered as. a means of concentrating tri-state tailings, The most likely heavy. liquid ‘would be acetylene tetrabromide, specific gravity 2.95. In the acetylene tetrabromide process the ore is first wetted with water, then separated on the heavy liquid; the water makes a protecting eheath around the mineral grains _ and enables the easy removal and recovery of the heavy liquid. Investigation showed that this protecting sheath ruins the process for such light weight material as the tri-state tailings, It gives an un-true specific gravity separation and due to the thickness of the water film the error is progressively exaggerated in the finer sizes. This is brought out by a recent test on water-wetted fluorspar (specific gravity 3.2) in the heavy liquid (specific gravity 2.’5.) All the fluorspar finer than 5 mesh floated. Even coarser grains would float if allowed to entrain air. Another ‘weakness in the process is the coagulation which occurs because the very heavy liquid does not wet the water sheath, or possibly because of the coalescence of the sheath-forming water of one grain when it impinges against its neighbor.
