~ DRIVER LICENSE RENEWAL “te eo IS NOW IN PROGRESS; Operators’ licenses of the folded ! type issued beginning 14, 1929, are zood for only two years from date of issuance and must now be renewed as they expire. They bear the ex. piration date stamped on their face. White card licenses issued prior to August 14, 1929, bear the notation, “Good until revoked,’ and do nov have to be renewed at this time. This summary of the license real situation is contained in a rae issued by the California State Automobile. association, following announcement by the depart==: of motor vehicles that folded . ae a,s distinguished from the white card ones, must be renewed . upon expiration. This is required by . an act of the 1929 legislature. Under authority of the motor vehicle department all offices of the California State Automobile association are handling applications for renewal of licenses. Except at the diseretion of the department, no examinations are being required. The motorist desiring to renew his driver’s licenses, as distinguished from the plication form before an authorized person. i “ Motorists are advised by the automobile association to examine their licenses and note the expiration date. In the event the license has already expired it should be renewed without further delay. Where the date of expiration has not yet arrived, it should be carefully noted and application for renewal made about ten days in advance. ; Offices of the automobile association offering renewal service to motorists are in San Francisco, Oakland, Auburn, Chico, Euréka, Fresno, Hanford, Hollister, Madera, Martinez, Marysville, Merced, Modesto, Monterey, Napa, Palo Alto, Placerville, Red Bluff, Redding, Sacramento, Salinas, San Jose, San Mateo, San Rafael, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, Stockton, Susanville, Ukiah, Vallejo, Willows, Woodland and Yreka. 0 ‘Mighty Title Borne by Many Unworthy Rulers Caesar was a title assumed by Octavianus, adopted son of the great dictator, Julius Caesar, and was by him handed down to his adopted son, Tiberius. It continued to be used by Caligula, Claudius and Nero as members, either by adoption or female deacent of Caesar's family; but though the family became extinct with Nero, g@ucceeding emperors still retained the mame as part of their title, and it was en Pierson (right) Alameda city A new Auburn sedan was the officia manager, welcomed the Century-Pacific lines to the San Francisco Bay Airdrome in Alameda. A fire procalamity.” ‘Fe said there were fm the town “neither enginéers, buckets nor any single instrument suitable for extinguishing fires,” and recommended that a company of 150 firemen be formed. White House Baths “OQharming Dolly Madison,” one of the most gracious of White House mistresses, set aside rooms for bathing, and instituted the first Presidential bathtubs. These bathtubs remained in the White House only until the entrance of Andrew Jackson, first plebefan President, who promptly chucked them out of doors for representing eomething decidedly undemocratic, and therefore offensive’ to the common people. However, the bathtub returned With the fastidious Fillmore to remain evermore enshrined, although the Fillmore tub has long since been replaced. Unfounded Popular Belief That a fire caused by lightning can not be extinguished with water is an old popular belief which still survives in many parts of the country, says an article in Pathfinder Magazine. Fire is fire no matter how started, whether by a match, spontaneous combustion, duced by lightning has the same can be extinguished in the same manner. the practice to prefix it to their own mameés, as Imperator Caesur, Domitlanus Augustus. When Hadrian adoptAelius Verus, he allowed the latter to take the title of Caesar, and from this time, though the title Augustus continued to ‘be confined to the reigning emperor, that of Caesar was also granted the second person in the state and the heir presumptive to the throne. After the death of Nero, his name was adopted as a kingly title by succeedfing Roman emperors. This practice continued, and the same title was used fm modern times, as in the case of kaiser and czar. Source of Fabled River Styx Merely Waterfall Bolos, a village on the slopes of * Mount Helmos, not far from Akrata im the division of southern Greece known as Achae, Is near the supposed gite of the fabled River Styx. In Greek mythology the Styx is a mighty river, the tenth part of the water of Oceanus, which flows in the lower world. It is described by Homer and Hesiod as the. terrible black water falling from a high precipice and dashing itself upon a lofty rock, through which it passed and then fell into the Crathis. The fabled waters of the Styx have been identified by students of antiquity as the two slender cascades fallimg over a high perpendicular precipice of Mount Helmos, near Solos. After winding among a labyrinth of rocks the water unites to form a mountain torrent which eventually joins the River Akrata (Crathis). Superstitious feelings of dread still attach to the water, which is considered of a pecullarly noxious character. Pliny Stirred to Wrath Those who have watched some volwnteer fire companies in action will be amused by the fact that Pliny got all wrought up about this matter of fire-fighting back in 106 A. D., writes Joseph T. Armstrong tn the New Orleans Item-Tribune. In a letter to the Roman emperor Trajan, Pliny deweribed a fire at Nicomedia, which -consumed several homes, the town house and the temple of Isis. Pliny indignantly blamed this damage in part to “the indolence of the people, who manifestly stood idle and moftionl@¢ss spectators of this terrib'e QUARTZ PROSPECT — Assays over $12—6-foot ledge Will consider partner one-half interest.
