Slashing of the coffee rate from $1.00 to 50c a bag. This action, writes Walter Radius in the current Far Eastern Survey ‘of the American Council of the Institute of Pacific Relations, culminates Japanese efforts to cut into the present lucrative trade controlled by an American-and a Norweigian line. During the past few years three . Japanese companies have increased services north bound from Argentina . and Brazil. All trade on this, route . has been under the control of the ! Pacific Coast River Plate Conference Agreement, with the Osaka Shosen Kaisha line as the ony non-member. For some years the O. S. K. line has been trying to capture some of the coffee trade or nearly 500,000 bags a year by offeri a rate of 80¢ a bag, but without success. Shippers are under. contract to conference lines, and services offered by O. S. K. have not been as regular and dependable. The Yamashita Line withdrew from the conference when its de; mands for an increase in the mimi. mum guarantee were refused and since, has cut its rate on coffee by 50 per cent and on canned meats 33 per cent. It is anticipated that the O. S. K. line will take similar steps: Since the East Coast of South America to the Pacific Coast of North America is only one leg of ‘the ser. vices of Japanese lines, it is advantageous for the operator to fill empty cargo space at any rate which will merely cover out of pocket handling charges, with a small margin for ‘overhead. Moreover, the great need for foreign exchange, in which shipping freights haye been one of Japan’s major sourtes, has forced JaPanese lines to concentrate on increasing the services! between foreign ports. Since most of the routes affected are covered by conference agreements, the only way in which the Japanese can achieve results is by an undercutting policy N.ew Jathings happening. that floods air under forced the soft shock-smothering They’re talking of wheels EXEMPLAR OF GENERAL BUICK 1939 PRICES ARE LOWER than ect T= vast Buick factory is a grand place to visit, these days.
