SHERIFF CARTER BRINGS IN SODA SPINGS MAN Sheriff George R. Carter, who left Nevada City Friday of last week for Salt Lake City to bring C. E. Mahoney to Truckee for preliminary examination, arrived at that place Monday evening. Mahoney was employed by the American Express company at Soda Springs, and is accused of having embezzled funds from that and the S. P. Company and gone blythly on J his way out of the country when apprehended at Salt Lake City. Sheriff Carter served a warrant issued from the court of justice at Truckee The preliminary trial was held in Truckee, Tuesday morning. Z District Attorney W. RE. Wright, Official Court Reporter Miles D. Coughlan and Deputy Sheriff William Rickard went to Truckee to attend the preliminary examination. The accused was bound over to the Superior Court with two counts against him, one from the Express Company in the sum of $450.00 and the other from the Southern Cacific in the su mof $270. Student Body Cards Mr. Coates has introduced the system of student body cards. This sytem is used by many other schools and is very beneficial, The student body cards are about 2x3 inches in size and canbe very conveniently carried about in one’s pocket or in a purse. They chose a pretty spot where there was a*table and a camp. stove and then settled to a good dinner, At about dusk the group returned home and every girl agreed that a good time Tebody to the; One of the latest organizations of the high school is the Numismatic club. The purpose of this club is to learn more about stamps and coins. The members also exchange stamps. The members believe that this club will be very interesting and intend to keep it.an active organization. They will hold two meetings each month on either the first and third or second. or, fourth Wednesdays: These meetings are to be held in the evenings at seven o'clock. Mr. Pedersen, a member of the faculty has organized this club. He has a large stamp collection and also a -. 8reat number of coins which he collected while on his trip to Europe last-summer. He displayed these coins at the first meeting and the
the members immediately took a @ great deal of interest in them because most of the members of the club had never seen foreign coins before. It was Surprising to see the large number of stamp collectors in a small school interested in the club as it became organized. The Freshman Party The Freshman boys and girls are busy decorating for their party to be held on October 24, in the Nevada City High School sym. The gym is going to be decorated in Halloween materials and is very pretty. Games planned by the boys, will be played and dancing will prevail, Then, later, refreshments will be served. Former Student Wins Scholarship. The students of Nevada City High were very glad to learn that Addison was had by each and every one of theny. ie The same srop of girls sponsored ; a food sale Saturday morning, Oct.! 18th, down town.The money they received from. the food gale is to be used for purchasing kitchen utensils for their club. room on Pine street that Mr. W. G. Richards donated the girls a month or so ago. Girls’ Basket Ball Team The girls of the Nevada City High School have organized their team for another year of peppy basket ball playing. The girls have practiced of the month will begin real practice under the direction of Coach Pedersen, Last Junior Meeting Last Tuesday, Oct., 14, the junior class helda meeting. The main purpose of the meeting was to find some way to raise money for the Junior Prom. It was finally decided that the class give a luncheon on some stormy day So it would be well patronized by the whole student body. The Numismatic Club Janes, member of the 1930 graduating class, has received the SidneyHillman-Ehrmann scholarship of two hundred dollars. Addison Janes is attending the University of California and is a boy of whom Nevada City High may be very proud. Junior Defeat Sophmores Captain Tamblyn led his fighting Juniors to a decisive victory over the Sophmires last Monday. The Sophmores put up a great fight and threatened to score several times despite the supburb Playing of the Juniors, ; The Juniors have a fast, hard charging team that doesn’t slacken for a moment but are in the game all the time. The students are still asking for football, whilet he. public still acts as if they are deaf and dumb. COME ON—WAKE UP— public sentiment ‘is what we want.
