COMMENT . By CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN On the Armistice day card distributed by the veterans this year, there ‘is a picture of George Washington, Frankiln D. Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, they appear on the card in the order named. Below the pictures apyears this inscription: “Lets us have. faith in America,’’ which of eourse means, ‘“‘Let us have faith in ourselves for are we not America?” There is a small orchard out on the road to San. Juan. The gateway on thé property is closed with barbed wire entanglements, and nailed on @ post written on the inside of a shoe box cover is this—‘Epitaph— Do not enter this property, if you do you will be shot without notice,”’ Think of it, friends, being shot with: out notice, how humiliating. Wee Shinese “Smiley’’ passed to: the land of his ancestors last week and was buried in the little cemetary on the hillside at San Juan. Smiley had none of this world’s goods but he had the personal attributes of kindness and charitable intentions toward everyone and his funeral was 4s great as any millionaire could wish. »Theother morning as I came up Commercial street I heard this conversation between some building mechaines, one said: “Well I see that the barbers have raised the price of haireuts to 65 cents. I guess we will get our hair cut shorter and then FINE WATCH REPAIRING Radio Service and REPAIRING Work Called for and Delivered CLARENCE R. GRAY . i . 520 Coyote Street . ! Paone 16 , . This won't last long.”’ Sunday was the boys seventh birthday and among the rémembrances received, Robinson Crusoe held the attention the’ longest and away beyond his accustomed time for .go‘ing to bed. He sat on the sofa very close to his mother while she read to him. Never once did the interest lag and beljeve itor. not I enjoyed. it as much as he did. My wife and her father are: playing their mandolins both being professionals. I am sitting here entranced with the music, just now Playing Raff’s Carvatina. Soriy it came to an end but here goes: Yo Vivo yi Amo”. by Campana. Wait a minute, there’s “In Meadows Green,’’ I do not know the composer of that one. But one thing is certain the classics like those just mentioned, are what makes music worth while.’ Jazz is not in the picture. Among the specialty food places in California, one would be delinquent if failing to mention Pop Ernst’s at Monterey. His Tbalone preparations can certainly e, mentioned among the best. But the piece de resistance is to Hear Pop speak of those d-aa-leec-é-ous abalones and to hear Pop déscribe the abuses to other people would almost make a wooden Indian cry. Editor of Nevada City Nugget: Anent the article appearing in a recent issue of Tue Mountain Messenger, entitled, ‘‘Are Parents TakTue remark that I too am a lover of Sierra county, but I have neither love nor respect for a sheet that by veiled innuendo and insinuation casts an unjust reflection upon the youth of our county. It is an old adage that, when the ! narrow-minded and bigoted reaches . . that period of mortal existence when the pleasures of lifé no longer appeal to him, he becomes a reformer and a self-appointed criterion of the ! acts of others. It is evident that ! “Reader,” the purported author of . the afore-mentioned artidle, is of that type, for the article shows every evidence of acute senility. When we scan the past lives of many ‘of these reformers, we’ sometimes . find that their early lives have not been lily-pure. Maybe we find that they have run *out on the girl who trusted them not. too wisely, but too well, or have forsaken a faithful wife. Were “Reader” to let his memory flare back for sixty. years to the days of his youth and take an honest inventory of his life at that time he would find that the youth of today have as high standards of morality as the youth of his day. Perhaps, he draws the ‘mantle of sweet} charity over the frailties of his past on the theory that he never had but one weakness and nature has overcome that. 5 On the insinuation of forced marriages, it might be informative to “Reader” to learn that, within the memory of the. oldest inhabitant, there has been none’ such within our county, except one, and, in that case both of the parties were from the Ozarks, a territory of which the “Reader” has probably heard. The people of Downieville know our boys and girls, and were it not for the impression that people who do not know them might get, no attention would have been paid to this annoymous publication, for the youth of our day need -no defense, and I have no fear as to their future conduct, having full realization, that} they will most creditably aissume: their duties as the Queens of Our! Households and the Arbiters of Our' Nation’s Destiny in the years tol come.
