Congress Meets
When November’s special session is over, congressmen
will find a legislative hamper chock-full of equally pressing
issues when they gather on Capitol Hill in January.
Our lawmakers will need the sharp-bladed wisdom of
. Solomon, the long-suffering patience of Job, and the mellow
disposition of Griselda, if they are to wrestle triumphantly
with such hard-shelled foes of economic well-being as unemployment, rising costs of goods in farm and city, and the need
_of finding jobs for the one and a half milion people still on
WPA.
Moreover, there’s the certainty that big and little business, and the consumer, will be affected by a new batch of
rules and regulations promoted by feromrist congressmen.
politicians—against the wishes of the President—successfully resorted to a ‘‘sneaker’’ amendment to get provisions of the

higher prices this “regulation’’ brought about.
With over-regulation telling business, big and small, .

America into a lawyer's paradise with their innumerable, and,
frequently, contradictory statutes.
Congress, indeed, has a big job cut out for it at the special session, and an even bigger one in January. So have the
citizens of California if they fulfill their job of maintaining a
watchful vigil over Congress, lest it spread the contagion of
corruption involved in government control.—Contributed.
A Wise Man’s Pariiies ie .
?
If there was ever a wise and thrifty American, it was
Benjamin Franklin, Esq., merchant, inventor, philosopher and
statesman.
We mention this not becalise there is any dispute about
it, but because it helps shed light on a matter the editor must
tackle every now and then. But since this matter of advertising is of vital importance to the reader too, the editor may be
pardoned for bringing the subject up.
Ben Franklin, who was never a man to. squander his
pence, well knew the value of advertising not only his own,
but his family’s goods, in the newspapers—even in the 1720's
when Philedalphia’s population numbered but a_ handful.
Though certain a man’s sins would find him out, Franklin
didn't believe the same held true of a merchant's goods, no
matter how excellent they were. His wife, Deborah, had in
stock a very good grade of toilet soap, but instead of depend

Harry G. Wells, author of ‘‘Nevada
County History’ published in 1880,
and party of friends from Los Angeles stopped over in Nevada City
for a short time Wednesday calling
. at the Nugget office Mr. Wells statled he did not own one of his books
but had put it in a library.
A rugged and active man it’was a
pleasure to hear him tell of earty
days. He spent the winter of 1879
and 1880 in this city. Mr. Wells had
this city,
the experience of going to Truckee
and helping to get the trains over
the mountains in deep snow. At that
time four engines were hooked together and driven at a rapid rate
down hill clearing the track as far
as possible and when they stopped
crews came and Gug them out. Today’s snow plow is'a long stride in
advancement.
With his party they drove from
Los Angeles to Yosemite Valley.
