half of the town had been destroyed. The water facilities of the town failed at the crucial moment and it was found that silt clogged the main pipe that fed water to the fire hydrants. When water force finally dislodged the silt it was too late and nothing could be saved that the fire had already reached. But the efforts of the fire-fighters, working with portable fire extingueshers and forest service. and CCC pumpers saved that portion of the town that the flames threatened. The Knighs ot Pythias hall was the one _ building that actually started burning that was saved by fire-fighters who cut away burning portions of the roof and turned streams of water on it. A phone to Ray Hawkins at Alleghany brought CCC men to the scene from the Camptonville spike . ? : camp. The excitement of the fire and wz ‘valuable hour was lost: before they arrived at the scene. . Through the use of the pumpers land portable: tanks of water the forast service and CCC men kept the fire from spreading beyond the area that was burning upon their arrival. The buildings above the hotel caught rapidly and the Fred Fippin residence and store, the big stable of Mrs. Anne Davies of Marysville, the Fred Fippin barn across. the street, the Chris Honold blacksmith shop and the nearly completed new home of Llewelen Davies were successively consumed. -Conctirrently with the burning of these buildings the fire jumped the creek on the south end of town and burned the Methodist church, Mrs. Anne Davies’ barn and the homes of Mrs. Edith McKenzie, Perry Bixby, Joe Finane. George Stone and Mrs. Mabel Davies The postoffice located in the home of P. W: Merris-was just two houses north of the burned area. Mr. and Mrs. Morris took no chances with the government property and movea all equipment possible out of the house and out of danger. 6rs caused a delay in getting informa. ‘tion to the forest service fire-fighters . }5 . The loss in money is hard to esti. mate but is set at about $30,000. It thought that insurance was carried on . buildings with the possible excep. tion of the hotel. Those made home. less by the fire were taken care of 'fby neighbors. and residents of Alleg. hany. A high north wind carried the _ blaze rapidly from building to building. Hoge, the manager of the Great Northern Gold Mines, Inc. reports that the new ledge opened up by the leasers is showing up’ well and that the mill is now operating steadily on a one shift basis. He also reports that plans are un~ derway for new developments on : this same ledge on the deeper lev-els and also for the purpose of opening up new ore bodies that have as yet not been developed in the foot wall and hanging wall country and that before-:a great while he expects to have the mill operating on a two ~ 3 "ee as the de-#e*shift basis and eventually in time operation as soon velopment plans are carried out. _ WELL BABY CONFERENCE TO BE HELD THURSDAY Sponsored’ by the Nevada City P.
