The assets of the individual banks in the country are in
government bonds ranging from 60 to 75 per cent of the total. Democratic Senator Glass said of this condition in March,
1935 “If we had a decline today in the market for government securities, and they fell to 8Z or even to 89 or 90, it
would put every bank in the United States into insolvency.
of the government, upon which the value of its
bonds rests, is not helped by the persistent deficits which are
now incurred. .

HALF OF FOREST
CITY WIPED OUT
et
PIU men and
Bucket brigades,
forest service fire fighters failed ii
their combined efforts to check the
fire that broke out’ in the old Bald
Mountain Hotel in Forest, Sierra
county at 11:45 Friday, night until
half of the town had been destroyed. The water facilities of the town
failed at the crucial moment and it
was found that silt clogged the main
pipe that fed water to the fire hydrants. When water force finally
dislodged the silt it was too late and
nothing could be saved that the fire
had already reached. But the efforts
of the fire-fighters, working with
portable fire extingueshers and forest service. and CCC pumpers saved
that portion of the town that the
flames threatened. The Knighs ot
Pythias hall was the one _ building
that actually started burning that
was saved by fire-fighters who cut
away burning portions of the roof
and turned streams of water on it.
A phone to Ray Hawkins at Alleghany brought CCC men to the
scene from the Camptonville spike
. ? :
camp. The excitement of the fire
and wz ‘valuable hour was lost:
before they arrived at the scene.
. Through the use of the pumpers
land portable: tanks of water the forast service and CCC men kept the
fire from spreading beyond the area
that was burning upon their arrival.
The buildings above the hotel
caught rapidly and the Fred Fippin
residence and store, the big stable
of Mrs. Anne Davies of Marysville,
the Fred Fippin barn across. the
street, the Chris Honold blacksmith
shop and the nearly completed new
home of Llewelen Davies were successively consumed. -Conctirrently
with the burning of these buildings
the fire jumped the creek on the
south end of town and burned the
Methodist church, Mrs. Anne Davies’
barn and the homes of Mrs. Edith
McKenzie, Perry Bixby, Joe Finane.
George Stone and Mrs. Mabel Davies
The postoffice located in the home
of P. W: Merris-was just two houses
north of the burned area. Mr. and
Mrs. Morris took no chances with
the government property and movea
all equipment possible out of the
house and out of danger.

ried pieces of flaming material were
quickly put out by the bucket brigades and later by the CCC forces.
Had the water main not been clogged with silt there possibly wouldhave been a much different story to
teil of the fire at Forest.
