S., of Nevada City returned Monday from attending grand chapter in Los An-; geles. Her son, Lionel, and wife mo-! tored to. the southern city and she; accompanied them, Over 3,000 delegates from nearly 500 chapters were present, only three chapters were not represented. Next Tuesday evening, November 2, Mrs. Davies will give her report from grand chapter. During the evening an amusing feature will be a baby picture display of members. Humor editor, Dorothy Arbogast, boys sports editor, Melvin Clark, girls sports editor, Ruth Godfrey, social editor, LaVerne Williard. The Quill advisor is’ Miss Rector. It is hoped that the annual may be done entirely my the high school pupils and work will start very soon. ' SCIENCE EXCURSIONS The domestic science classes of Nevada ‘City high school have been fortunate in béing able to go on several excursions. Last Friday they visited Wasley poultry farm and learned about conditions peculiar to poultry. Wednesday they went to Grass Valley dairy. The visit was very interesting and the girls were zrateful to the proprietors for allowing their trip through the dairy and also the very generous quantity of ice cream with which they were supplied. These will be the first of many excursions planned by Miss McKnight, domestic science instructor. FRESHMAN DANCE The freshmen at the Nevada City high school are giving a school dance this evening, October 29 in the high schol gymnasium. Committees have been chosen: Mary Libbey, chairman of refreshment committee; Charles Thomas, chairman of finance committe and Ralph Brown, chairman arrangement committee. Foote’s orchestra is going to provide music and punch will be sold. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED A surprise party was held for Ruth Godfrey to celebrate her birthday at the home of Barbara Phariss on Monday evening. The guests were Ruth Godfrey, Vella Flindt, LaVerne Williard, Jean Martz, Barbara Phariss, Evelyn Lotz, Laura Price, Bill Medelyn, Elsworth Sherman, Paul Phariss, Bill Osborne, . Holmes, secretary of the State Board of Funeral Directors. accompanied by’ Mrs. Holmes, left yesiterday for San Francisco and Los Angeles for several days. While in Los Angeles he will attend a state ‘board meeting. Mrs. Maude Nerva of San Francisco spent last week end in this city visiting friends and making some, improvements on her property at the Gold Run bridge. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith, part ‘owners of the Secret Mine near Washington, were Nevada City visitors Wednesday. Mr. Smith is employed on the 14 mile flume being built iby the Omega gravel mine. Mr. and Mrs, Smith plan to leave soon for Sonoma county to spend the winter. They have stayed at the mine several winters and one season 27 feet of snow fell. Q Mr, and Mrs. Ed Conley, who left Nevada City last spring. for Bisbee, Arizona, have returned to this eity which will be pleasing news to their many friends. While they have had a wonderful trip they are glad to return to this city to reside. Their daughter, Miss Mavis Couley, is with relatives.in Sacramento. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Graniteville, aunt jjand of of Jackson uncle ‘Floyd Burnett of this city, stopped over in Nevada City a short time yesterday while enroute to Sacramento to visit for a time.
