The mushroom growth of these mobile homes fostering nomadic living on an unprecendented scale is no less than astonishing. Already there are more than 300,000, and by next year it is estimated there'll be half a million. And a.doz‘en years hence, say some sociologists, a quarter of the population will be free wheeling it hither.and yon in trailer Jee Imagine what this can mean for California's $200,000,000 tourist crop! It will certainly grow. It might even double in a decade. A little foresight, at this early stage of the trailer movement, will pay big dividends. California can prepare now to} be a good host to the trailers by providing more auto camp and park facilities, and thus get the jump on other statescompeting for this business. The beauty of it is that there is now at hand a situation ready-made to fill the need. We have a half-completed state park system, with plans al! 'aid out for the whole system of 125 parks—redwood, mountain, lake, lagoon, beach and desert parks—most with camping facilities. And the money to complete it is in sight, without bond issue or new taxes. That money will come in royalties from state-owned oil under tidelands, if voters pass proposition Number 4 on the November ballot. Engineers. and experts are satisfied with it as a solution to drilling.and leasing problems which will make the oil available. And it provides that half the state’s royalties must be used for state parks. LABOR SUPPORTS GAS TAX BILL _ The California State Federation of Labor yesterday announced endorsement of Proposition No. 10 on the November 3rd ballot, preventing diversion of gasoline taxes to oter than -highway purposes. Announcement of labor’s stand was made by Edward D. Vandeleur, secretary of the organization. ‘‘Diversion of highway construction monies, which is threatened in the next legaslature,’’ said Secretary Vandeleuf, ‘‘would cause the loss of approximately $14,500,000 in federal aid funds and would throw about 15,000 men out of employment for a year, as well as cripple trade and commerce. “It is estimated that 91c of each highway dollar goes to tabioss ef mobile, oil, cement, and other fi dustries which employ thousands of workers depend to a great extent on highway progress. “Approval of No. 10 will prohibit the use of motor vehicle and gasoline tax monies for purposes foreign to the construction, reconstruction, and* maintenance of highways and major city streets. The measure should have the unanimous support of those who seek a return to normal economic conditions and pre tion of large additions to the relief rolls.” Judge Henty:F.
