this. year :
It was hoped and planned by Forest Service officials to continue this
camp as a winter-camp at.Freemans

did» rot like the backwoods and recomniended that the camp be com. pletely removed. Thus cutting the
. season short, the men worked but
tiree full “months, and left in the
midst of a bad fire season, contrary
to the purpose of the C. C. C. movement, anda display of incompenancy
in management and ecommand as far
as the good of the country is concerned.

'BURROS TOO SMART
FOR DEER HUNTERS
KERNVILLE, Cal., Oct. §—-(UP)
~That old’ desert mystery, where do
burros go during September, was believed to have been solved today.
According to Mojave desert residents, each September all burros not
anchored down disappear for. a few
weeks. They drop from sight as
. completely as though swallowed by
the earth.
J.-C. Howe, packer, trapper and
of the beasts, Says the burros disappear because they are intelligent.
“Deer season is open
ber,”” he said. “The burros
better than to stay around where
they may be mistaken for deer.”’

FOREST FIRES START
AS €. €. C. BOYS DEPART
CAMPTONVILLE, Oct. 7—In‘ less
than an hour after the last eight
Kentucky boys had left town for
theirloine state, being the last eastern consignment from Miller Ranch
C. C .C. camp No. 597,-three forest
fires broke out five miles south -of
here on the Marysville road. The
fires appeared to be of incendiary
origin, but were’set in a place where
it did not spread rapidly, and Fire
Guard A. H. Hamilton from the local
forest service headquarters with a
small crew of men rushed to the
scene and in a couple of hours had
. thie fires under control. Tempera. tures and humidity are as bad this
. eek as they were during any time
; of the summer months, and the fire
season is still prevalent.
