MEDICAL CIRCUIT RIDER
America wa’? shocled when doctor's reports on recruits
came through in the first World War. People were so used to
thinking of Americans as the soundest, healthiest people on
earth that they could scarcely believe so-many things could
ail the cream of the crop, American young manhood.
After 20 years of child health conferences and ~ school
health programs, authorized by legislation in 1921, America
is shocked once more to find that the physical _ condition of
draftees now underroing army examinations is not vastly better than the medical charts indicate.
Public health facilities are pretty generally available
throughout the country, and yet. according to Dr. Amos U.
“Christie of the University of California Medical School, only
C
37 per cent of pre-school children in rural areas have had even .
a single health examination. Among city children, 5] per cent
thave had the advantage of medical examinations.
Recommended by Dr. Christie for the welfare of our
youngsters are more health conferences in which parents as
well as physicians and nurses are taught the latest technique
of child care, to be stressed particularly in rural communities.
New on the provram of child health is a “pediatric circuit rider,” a role which will take Dr. Sydney Sinclair also of
the University Medical School, all over California to act as
consultant for county medical societies, physicians and groups
involved in the care of children—a program which will be endorsed by every parent in the state-—Contributed.
DOG ETIQUETTE
In Denver. Colorado. a grocer who knows both dogs and
human beings installed hitching—posts for dogs outside his
store.
He put leashes on the posts long enough so the dogs
were comfortably tethered. but short enough so they couldn't
get near enough each other to scrav. And he put locks on the
leashes, so that fine breeds as well as mutts would be safe
while their owners shopped.
That grocer must have pleased many citizens who owned dogs and a great many more who didn’t. For however much
we love our dogs. they don’t belong in grocery stores, nuzzling the fruits and vegetables and shedding hair indiscriminately, however unintentionally. sf
In New York, and unfortunately in only a very few other
cities, street signs warn strollers, “Curb Your Dog.”’ It is a reminder to the owners who doesn’t think enough of his pet to

A CASE FOR THE PARSON
A man who doesn’t marry is 40 per cent more likely to.
die before 65 and 9 times more susceptible to mental disease
than if he were someone’s husband, says Ruth Arrel in a magazine article quoting life insurance statistics. _
A woman who stays single is 2] per cent more likely to
die before 65 and 30 per cent more likely to meet with a fatal
accident than her married sister.
If your boy friend hesitates to propose or your girl friend
is reluctant, perhaps quoting statistics like those may help to.
tip the scales in favor of Cupid.—Contributed.

] wonder if we are awake,
Or: are we smugly sleeping
While nearer to our sacred shores
The flames of war are sweeping.
I wonder why Ameriga is not fully awake and why each
individual:is not on alert. Can it be that we have been lulled
into a state of insecurity by the soothing syrup of ‘National
Security”, the pao of “Appeasement” and other cloying nostrums. compounded and administered by worthy senators, excolonels, et al?
Surely the time is past for mental anesthetics, wishful
thinking and ostrichizine, or listening to the siren voices of
isolationists and for cryin’. ‘peace, peace,” when there is no
peace. Herculean tasks confront our present day. world, and
America cannot evade her destiny.
In this time of national emergency. Frankling D. Roosevelt is our duely elected leader. He is the Commander in Chief
of both armv and navy and if we are wise, we will place no
stumbline blocks in his pathway. His knowledge is of necessity. greater than our own, for to him all sources of information are available. Then too, he has the advantage of consultation with the informed minds of the day. If we cannot trust
his leadershin is critical time, we are as lost sheep bleat‘ne in the wilderness and that fact should be clearly patent to
=verv normal mind.
We couldn't live in a Nazi dominated world and_ yet,
world domination is the goal of Hitler’s mad ambition. Read
Mein Kamnf—look in the book and see. Many of his diabolical plans have already been put into effect, and it is his purpose to build creater war machines and train vaster armies
capable of inflicting infernal horror and destruction upon
every land which stands in his way. In order that his criminal
system may be perpetuated, German’ children are carefully
drilled in the black arts of hatred and violence from the time,
‘when as mere infants. they first gurgle “'goo-t, goo-t’’ over a
howl of steaming cruel. This monster must be stopped, and if
Encland's strength is insufficient for the task, if she falters
and seems powerless to save her island, fortress, one cannot
doubt that “her claymore shall cleave to our hand.”
The mad fiend of Berlin must be destroyed, his utterly’
evil philosonhy of life driven from the minds of men and the
sorrow he has caused, assuaged. How can America isolate
herself from these stupendous tasks? How can any true man
or woman refuse to join the march to victory?
I wonder if little Japan is trying to demonstrate isolation
to the world. She might have been a respected member of a
friendly eroun of nations had she not chosen to espouse the
role of Pacific ocean nuisance. number one. Her dear friend,
Mussolini is nractically horse de combat and boss man Hitler
is very. very busy—yes. in a world where the word isolation
is fast becomeing obsolete, Japan seems destined ‘to at least,
look the part.
Uncle Silas says: “‘I like crab meat, but.if the Japanese
can’t furnish it, I'll iust go over to the lake in the diggings and
ratch me some cat fish for dinner.—A. Merriam Conner.

“There seems to be some misapprehension to the effect that the
