_ NEVADA iL § NUGGET FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1937. a Nevada City Nugget 305 Broad Street. Phone 36 or. ‘ A Legal Newspaper, as defined by statute. Taxes Come Out oo Hiding As a result of a new ruling. by the State Board of Egual-} ¥ ization, California merchants, in the future, must show the retail price of their commodities separate from the state sales tax; both in advertising copy and in statements to customers. Effective October . , every retail dealer must collect the sales tax (even though he might sometimes prefer to absorb it)—and such statements ag “We pay the tax”’ or ‘Sales tax included” will be strictly t taboo. : We heartily approve of that ruling. If we must pay taxes —and pay them we must—it is salutary that we should know just where, when and how much! Politicians, as a genera! rule, prefer hidden taxes, as they seldom arouse taxpaver-resist-. ance, but the Board of Equalization is to be congratulated on having the courage to bring the sales tax out of hiding so that every buyer, when he makes a purchase, will realize that he is paying his bit toward the cost'of government We have no quarrel] with the sales tax. But we believe every taxpayer ioald know when he pays his share of taxes. Perhaps, with our taxes out in the open, we shall be more cau« tious when we are confronted with new demands for govern‘ miental expenditures, schemes to reduce the required vote for revenue bonds from two-thirds to a bare majority — and Utopian plans to distribute “25 every Monday morning” to hundreds of thousands of pensioners! Property owners always have been painfully conscious of their contributions to government; their tax bills are a constant reminder. But there are only 1,000,000 common property taxpayers in. California. And there are nearly 7.000,000 citizens who pay the sales tax. It is well that the 7,000,000 shall be ‘‘conscious taxpayers’ before the 1938 ballot comes along. At least we'll all know that the pennies don’t come from heaven.—Contributed. t Where: Night Is Day California, shortly, will !aunch its first experiments with lighted highways. The State Highway Department announces that a three-mile stretch on the Bayshore Highway, just south of San Francisco, and the Waldo approach to the Golden: Gate bridge will be two of the initial experiments. Other test stretch. es will be lighted in Southern California as part of the experiment to determine the effectiveness of highway lighting in reducing our shocking automobile accident toll. We shall all watch these experiments with great interest and with fervent hope that a practical way may be found to remove some of the hazard from night driving. Certain it is meeting public problems cannot continue to countenance the wholesale slaughter which has given us the shameful title of first in the Untied States in killing and maiming both’ motorists and pedestrians. And if the experiments are successful, highway lighting may also become a new inducemnt to bring the tourist world te our vacation playgrounds. Our boost organizations may soon be placarding: “Come to California, Where Night Is -Day—Lighted Highways To Nature’s Wonderlands!"” Or maybe the signs will read, “Play 24 Hours A Day!” Then if we can welcome them without killing them in traffic crack-ups, we shall have improved our right to be known as No. .
