A Call to Alms

E second annual appeal to the
American people to help relieve
the untold sufferings of the countless millions of Chinese non-combatants in the current invasion of
China by Japanese armed forces,
will be launched in the week of
October 30 by the United Council
for Civilian Relief in China, it was
announced yesterday by Col, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., Chairman of the
Council. The United Council will
again stage “Bowl of Rice” parties
in some 2,000 communities throughout the United States in its drive
for funds to provide food and medical care for the Chinese women and
children refugees suffering not: only
from the horrors of war, but from
ravages of famine and flood,

Ellis Clark, who was operated
upon at the Nevada City Sanitarium
Wednesday forenoon for appendicitis
and also had his tonsils removed is
recovering. Dr, B. W. Hummelt was
the surgeon.

the superintendent states her policy
for the future is the same as in the
past, all to cooperate and to endeavor to get every boy and girl in
the city to attend some one Sunday
school. The teachers meeting will be
held at 7:30 on Friday evening.

Lebbey’s was well attended. The early morning and 11 o’clock services
Sunday were also well attended.
MUNICIPAL POOL Is
CLOSED FOR SEASON
Swimming is at an end at the Nevada City Municipal Pool. Opening
June 1 there has been a daily average of 200 boys, girls and adults,
who enjoyed the big pool.
During the whole swimming season there were no serious accidents.
Les Hubbard was lifeguard and the
manager of the pool and Mrs, Hubbard was in charge of the concessions.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bush of this
city spent last week end in ‘old Shasta west of Redding visiting her relatives. Mr. Bush is in the employ of
the State Division of Highways.
Miss Gertrude Wilde, employed in
the county recorder’s office, and her
grandmother of Sierra City are enjoying a vacation in the bay district.
Plans are to continue to Los Angeles before returning home.
H. F. Sofge, secretary Nevada City
Chamber of Commerce, spent two
days in the Nevada County booth at
the state fair in Sacramento. He
stated the old hydraulic monitor of

forest near Santa Barbara. There
have been a lot of fires in that forest and he was transferred there to
