The: objectives of the associated
sportsmen in pushing the public
shooting grounds program are twofold: (1) To ‘provide the unattached
hunter—the No. 2 ‘hunter—with an
adequate place to shoot at a reasonable cost; (2) To control and minmize depredations on agriculture.

LOOK OUT FOR FIRE, FOREST
SERVICE WARNS
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 13—With
resumption of travel to national for‘est areas in California, following
{ elimination og gasoline rationing,
great care must be exeercised to
avoid starting forest fires, Regional
Forester S. B. Show warned.
The peak of the dry season is the
most dangerous time of year, Show
pointed out. Nearly 1200 fires have
fbeen reported this summer in national forests in the state, one third
. of them caused by carelessness. The
number of man caused fires was considerably more than that of 1944,
and slightly over the five year average. :
“Continued cooperation of the
public in fire prevention is essential’”’
; Show said, “if the public’s own playj grounds and watersheds are to. be
preserved in their natural condition.’

Sonoma—A much disputed word:
it may come from the Indian tsonoma, meaning earth village, or from

from an Indian word meaning valley of the moon, because of the crescent shaped valley.
