But a declaration made at a banquet the other day by a high court justice there, had an ominous tone about it that would prefer never to hear anywhere in America. He said he was ready to ‘‘stand beside’” any Connecticut trial judge who imposed restrictions on the press. Then he named a few he thought ‘desirable’: that “only newspapers* which can. be amenable to discipline” should be permitted in the courtroom; that newspapers having general circulation in the state should, “perhaps under close restrictions,” be admitted; and that various other conditions be enforced. The ominous part about such statements is that they are unnecessary. Newspapers, like everyone else who enters a courtroom, are subject to contempt proceedings. Is that not enough, without aggressive declarations about special restrictions? Few persons will deny the need for vigilance against anything savoring of controlled press advocacy. For without freedom of the press, as well as its twin safeguard, freedom of speech, democracy could not long survive. Nor could the Constitution, whose birth, incidentally, we are observing this ‘very week. Any American, if he could live for a while in one of the dictatorships of Europe, would probably agree heartily with the view voiced by Thomas Jefferson when he said he'd rather live in a country where there was no government at all, than in one where the press was not free. ramen a ae nost of * Immense Boulder Dam (Contributed) all the works of man. When the tap of a tiny telegraph, key three thousand miles away opened all its outlet valves for last week's dedication ceremony, it released a cataract mightier than Niagara, and several feet higher. Water poured down at the rate. of 300,000 cubic: feet a minute. More thousands of tons of concrete have been poured into this engineering project than any other ever completed. The 1. 7-million dollar power plant will have a capacity load of 1,835,000 horsepower more than double the electrical energy generated at Niagara Falls on the American side. _ It will spread power and water over thirty million acres of land. The Last Deadline ° (Contributed) . What's this, another registration deadline? That is so—only this one’s different. It’s the real, genuine, official and final deadline of them all. If you haven't 24, you'll be out of the swim entirely. You'll have lost your chance to vote, on November 3, for a President of the United States, an assorted collection of _ U.S. Congressmen and state legislators, and two dozen ballot "propositions touching upon almost every conceivable subject. _. The man without’a vote will be the forgotten man in this fair land for the next month and a half. And no one with a spark of public spirit in him:could sit on the sidelines during the political battle of the century. So, if you've not done so yet this year, by all means do register now, before it’s too late. You've only a few days left. é ice 107 Mill St. per Grass.
