The biggest banking organization on earth. __Sinee—its_inception_in-1904-the Bank of Italy has figured largely ; in the financial and economic struc‘ ture of California. Starting without any special . aplomb the bank has grown to such codlossol proportions that it makes ne dizzy to try to keep pace with its gigantic strides. By comparison the man with millions looks small and no individual in the morld could have any effect whatsoever in pitting his puny strength against such an institution. With its vast holdings and carefully planned modus operandi it will grow and grow until its invincebility will be recognized, and it will stand out as the world’s _ greatest money power. 0 E. S. White of Sacramento traveling passenger agent of the Southern Pacific Company was a pleasant caller at The Nugget office Wednesday. Baceate 7 STATEMENT OF W. E. WRIGHT: CANDIDATE FOR DISTRICT ATTORNEY Upon my record in office and upon my record in Nevada County, I respectfully ask the citizens of Nevada County to re-elect me District Attorney at the coming general election in November, I have been engaged in the practice of law in this County for fifteen years. Prior to my election as your District Attorney, I spent several years in studying and familiarizing myself with the problems and the needs of, Nevada County and have ‘devoted my time and my best energies, both in and out of office, to its welfare—to its roads, its mines, its agriculture, horticulture and livestock and to its other’ industries, actual and potential. Since my election eight years ago, I have continued these activities with vigor and with a more complete understanding; and, as your District Attorney, I have faithfully . honestly, conscientiously and efficiently discharged my official duties. It has been my constant aim to adminster the office economically as; well as competently and to save the . tax payers unnecessary expense. The. District Attorneyship office of great responsibility. power conferred upon by the statutes of California is so extensive that sound and mature judgement is required to meet the important questions that constantly confront him. Failing this, it is posis an The less expense and litigation. I have at all times consulted. and worked harmoniously with every County official, always striving to promote peace, justice, safety and the general welfare of the County. Criminal prosecutions, while spectacular in their conduct and at times apt to loom large in the public eye, are only a part of the many duties of the office, most of which are exact ing and. important; and, while the civil activities of the District Attorney are often void of public intérest, they are vitally important, nevertheless; to the public welfare. My years of experience ought to be of value to the residents and citizens: of the County. Before election day I shall acquaint my fellow citizens with more facts as to my _ activities in the County and as to the manner in which I have discharged my official duties. Although not a native of California, Iam a native of the West, and California has been’ my adopted home for thirty years. From date of birth to date, Iam proud of my record as an American citizen, rancher, layman, lawyer and as District Attorney; and my mained unsullied by one breath of suspicion, other than by the malicious mis-statements recently circulated, completely false and unsupported by any fact or facts, and actuated alone’ by the desire to discredit me and for vengeance. I stand firmly upon my _ record and reputation in this County, in California and in any other part of the country where I have lived; and upon that record and that reputation I depend for your ‘support anda favorable ballot at the November election. W. E. WRIGHT. pleats eee ee JUDGE NEVILLE TO SERVE SUPERIOR COURT LOS ANGELES Henry B. Neville of. IDAHO MARYLAND VEIN YIELDS RICH GOLD ORE The Dorsey vein in the IdahoMaryland mine at Grass Valley has been opened from the 1900 level up to'the ‘1500 level by a series of raises, and according to recent announcments the results’ have been more than satisfactory. The ore taken from the Dorsey vein is of high average grade and in this part of the mine, ground is virgin. NEW MINING EXCHANGE TO REVIVE MINE INDUSTRY That the new mining exchange in New ‘York, which held its first meeting September 10, will shortly create an active market for mining stocks in the east and will be of great benefit to the industry -is the opinion expressed by R. This is equivalent to the valuation of 18 of the state’s 29 counties and represents 79 per cent of the total valuation of the two largest counties. Twenty-five years ago this property contributed almost nothing” to state revennes, Now it is one of the largest taxpayers. It furnishés employment at good wages for thousands of workers and théir families and, directly and indirectly, purchases the products and services of every other business within-the-state ie is example is indicative of the Amportance of mining to the west. BOUNDARY MINES SUE FOR POSSESSION The Boundary Mines in the Grass Valley district is at present invelved in a civil suit called in the superior court of Nevada County Thursday under Boundry Mines vs. Joseph Slye. The trial. is set for November 10. The Boundary Mines covers an area comprising 73 acres, and was originally developed and promoted by M.:.J. Brock later, being leased by Joseph Slye. About May Ist last year a valuable strike of jewelry rock was made at the 350 level of this mine, when ore was uncovered which was roughly valued at $20,000 as recorded in the press at that time. One large chunk of quartz encrusted with clusters of virgin. gold and valued at 1 $2,000 was at that time on display. 'some of the ore being placed for a time in The Nugget. office. The strike made a very decided sensation in mining circles over the country. ‘JUDICIOUS INQUIRIES MIGHT HELP With all the liberality of President Hoover in appointing fact-finding commisions, I wonder that he has inot appointed a few to get some of the data relative to the metal industry. There are innumerable possibilities. : How about a commission to inquire into the justice of importing into this country and making it a dumping ground for silver produced by conviet. or peon labor in other countries an@ thereby virtually ruining silver mining? Another might be invited to spend a delightful vacation.in California to asctrtain whether mining is more important than fishing and see whether it is advisable to require’ mining to stop because it muddies up certain California fishing streams. And still another might rtport om the feasibility of inviting capital to participate in gold mining and we. might have a companion commission to the farm relief board in a mine relief board.—The Mining Journal. 0.
