CHARGES ARE DISMISSED
NEVADA CITY: Judge James Snell
yesterday dismissed the charges of receiving stolen property against Mr
and Mrs. Donald Price of Grass Valley. Mrs. Price is the mother of Sanford Williams, one of four youths
charged with burglary and theft in
the Siskiyou County court.
Three months ago Sheriff Richard
Hoskins and’ Frank Knuckey, Grass
Valley chief of police and aides, raided three homes in Grass Valley, and
uncoveréd a large amount of loot,
taken allegedly by the four. youths of
which Mrs. Price’s son was one.

TAKES OVER THE
NATIONAL HOTEL
NEVADA CITY: Dick Edwards of
Auburn, Placer County, has taken a
ten-year lease of the National Hotel
here from the owner, George Murphy.
Edwards has been manager of the
Auburn Hotel since 1943. He will assume his new duties here some time
this week.
Edwards is president of the Auburn
Rotary Club. Alvin Carveth, formerly of Grass Valley, will fill his unexpired term when he leaves for this
city.
He has been in the hotel business
practically all of his life and before
coming here was in the service, during which time he ran hotels in North
Africa for the U. S. Engineers.
Good quality table syrup may be
obtained from almond hulls, a University “of California College of Agriculture expert has found.

Mrs. Alice Christine Dowd
GRASS VALLEY: Mrs. Alice
Christine Dowd, widow of the late
Philip Dowd of this city; passed away
Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Jones Memorial Hospital after a thfee months’
illness.
Mrs: Dowd was a native of Grass
Valley, born here Sept. 29, 1887. She
leaves two sons, Raymond and Clarence; a sister, Mrs. Marie Schneider;
and a brother, Adolf Morateur, all of
Grass Valley; and a sister, Sister
Mary Ursula of the Mercy Hospital
in Sacramento.
Rosary will be held. at 8:00 p. m™
Tuesday at the Hooper Weaver Mortuary. Services will be Wednesday,
Sept. 17th, at 9:30 a. m. at thé Catholic Church and intermentwill follow
in the Catholic Cemetery.

Funeral Today For John
Eddy of Zion Street
NEVADA CITY: Funeral services
will be held today for John Eddy, who}
passed away at his home on Zion St,
Sept. Asth. Degth came unexpectédly.
Eddy was found dead by neighbors
Saturday morning, slumped over beside his radio, which was still playing.
The deceased was a native of Nevada City, having been born here August 14, 1878. He was a miner by
occupation, having for years’ been
hoist“man at the Central mine. He
was also a member of the Eagles
lodge. ¢
Surviving relatives are two sisters,
Mrs. Emma Campbell and Mrs. Fred
Homel of San Francisco; a brother,
W. L. Eddy of Grass Valley; a niece,
-Mrs. A. E. Jackson of San Francisco;
Jack Homel, a nephew of Ohio; and
Orson Homel, another nephew of Detroit.
Coroner Alvah Hooper stated that
death was undoubtedly dué to a heart
attack and ‘it probably occurred
around midnight. Neighbors observed the light burning all night and
phoned the sheriff's office.
