S. _ ARMY BOARD ENGINEERS Further interest in the water problems of California is being shown by the federal government, An inspection trip through the state will be made this week by the nited States army board of engineers of rivers and harbors. All projects affecting navigation, navigable rivers, and flood control, é@nd all harbor Projects come under the jurisdiceitn of this important federal board. All such projects must receive the approval and recommendation of the -board before being acted upon favorably by the chief of engineers and the war department. On the official trip are Brigadier General Herbert Deakyne, member of board of engineers; Colonel Edward H. Schulz, member of ‘board of engineers; Lieutenant Colonel Warren T. Nannum, member board of engineers; Captain Albert B. Jones, corps of engineers U. S. army; Major J. R. D. Matheson, member of California debris commission; Captain W. A. Wood, corps of engineers U. The board of engineers will arrive in Bakersfield by train on Tuesday the 15th. Here they will be met by the state officials and shown the major points of interest of the water Problems and needs of the Great Central valley. present intensive development now) throughout the San Joaquin and the Sacramento valleys and delta, the water needs of the various areas and location of the units of the state . water plan. Especial attention will be taken of the problems involved in the areas of deficient water supply in the Upper San Joaquin valley and of the salinity Problem in the SacTramento and San Joaquin delta. The board of engineers will also inspect the flood eontrol ‘and navigation problems of the Sacramento valley and will be shown weirs, by" ‘passes and levee system of the flood control‘ project. The route of the party passes on through Famosa, Porterville, Lindsay, Exeter, the foothill district, Centerville and Clovis to Friant, and closely parallels the proposed location of the San Joaquin and Kern eounty canal passing through aréas where highly developed farms have been abandoned through lack of sufficient water supply. At Friant the dam site of the Friant reservoir will be examined. The party will then drive to Fresno for lunch and for conference with local representatives of the irrigation interests and Members of Governor Rolph’s citizens water commission and of the legislative water resources committee residing in the upper San Joaquin valley. In the afternoon the Party will visit Mendota, Passing through the west side irrigated landg to Dos Palos where they will cross to east side and inspect the Merced, Turlock, Modesfo and South San Joaquin irrigation districts, spending the night in Stockton. On Wednesday the 16th a breakfast will be given at Stockton, attended by represetnatives of the Lower San Joaquin valley and the delta and by members ofthe legislative water resources committee. Weeks and his associates have secured an interest in the property from Harry D, Ramsay of Berkeley and John Ogle of Cisco, Weeks and his crew of men are how opening up an ancient tunnel ‘that is belidved to be in about 100 feet. Several years ago Ramsay and Ogle were driven out of the tunnel by a flow of quicksand that moved at the rate of eight feet an hour. In the sand were found boulders of ore, Some of which assayed $4,240 a ton. A half ton of boulders was sold for $1,300. Ramsay was formerly owner of the Carlyle mine, which is now owned by the Metal Products Holding Corporation.
