Football
Focus
By JOHN McALLISTER LEWIS
The other day while _ discussing
Glenn Dobbs of the Brookifn Dodgers
in connection with the fray between
. the 49ers and Dodgers, considerable
mention was made of the recognition
given to Mr. Dobbs who went to town
to the All America League last year.
The latest news is that in a compliae trade. maneuver triple threat
mn will soon be playing for the already potent L. A. Dons.
In the same player swap, Angelo
Bertelli of Notre Dame fame will end
up on the Chicago Rockets: player roster and Bob (Hunchy) Hoernschmeyer will take over the field generalship
for Cliff Battles of the Dodgers.
From here it looks like the Dons
are determined to’ stop the strong San
Francisco entry in the. All America
eonference by their strong buying
sg a Dobbs was drawing $25,000
a year from Brooklyn. Bud De Groot
may find that he will need more than
the addition of Dobbs to stop some of
the eastern conference members’ that
have not as yet invaded the coast.
' Somesports writers are already
helping De Groot revamp his offensive by changing from a “T* to a single wing, box, or double wing. This
may happen but is not necessary in
order to take full advantage of all
Dobbs abilities. Naturally all teams
in that or: ahy other league of~highly
organized football will modify their
plays or add new ones as the year
progresses.» Dobbs will be a terrific
aBSet to an already strong aggregation. ‘
The stock on the Berkeley campus
seems to be on the-upswing and if
Waldorf can put.sufficient impetus
on the defensive side of the.game,
there’s no telling what may < evolve.
Cal faces the Broncds of Santa Clara
in their opener. . Both teams were
unimpressive in 1946 and both have
strong potentialities for 1947 despite
many unknown quantities.
Most. collegiate < football. circuits
the . National. Football Pretessional
. Teague opens about the samé time.
Again Iet’s note the increasing: popularity of professional football. Dobbs
drew héadlines’ from papers through“out the nation: regarding his transfer
to coast faotball. circles. —
-One professional league that eon
vides a question mark is the Pacific
Coast League which includes teams
will open September 20th or later and’
from Los Angeles, San Franciace, Sacramento, etc. At one time they comprised the sole professional football
played on the west coast. Rufus Klawans, head of the smaller league, has
+t somehow. managed to keep the league
intact.
The salaries are lower, they. draw
smaller crowds and,in general don’t
put on @ comparable show, but regardléss there are many good players
on. the different squads.
The Pacific Coast’ Leagues in foot‘ball. and baseball can’t be compared
because there are. major league football teams on the coast but no major
league baseball teams. _Howéver, you
may feel as many do that Pacific
Coast basbeall is of major league
caliber. ;
Both basketball and football ate
surging forth and the sports minded
public is now. entertained ‘no matter
what season and regardless of whether
they prefer the highly ‘competitive
school play or the perfection of the
professionals.
