The vefdict of the jury represents
weeks of hard work on the part of
the district attorney and the sheriff
in gathering the evidence and preparing for its proper presentation in
court. The great majority of people
believe the verdict was just. A verdict of hanging when so large a proportion of the testimony was circumstantial in its -character, most
thoughtful commentators’ séemed to
think would be unwarranted.

This Is Apple Week
This is Apple Week for Nevada
County, beginning today and lasting
until next Friday .Prime mover in
this celebration is L, G,. Lageson,
county horticultural commissioner,
who has brought producers, dealers
and consumers together to place Nevada County Apples on the pedestal
of fame right next to the one that
Nevada County gold occupies.
This is the week to view the apple
display in all the show windows of
the grocers and fruit dealers of Nevada City and Grass Valley. The apples are a beautiful show. And the
best of it is they are just as good as
they look. There is not.a disappointing bite in all the apples that are
properly grown, sprayed, cultivated
their flavor and their keeping qualities are better known outside this
county than right here where they
are grown. Of course there are plenty of people who.are in the know.
They buy apples for winter conFor Nevada County
sumption year after year. They lay
in a supply of what Commissioner
Lageson calls ‘‘the best eating’ tlie
best “cooking and the best keeping

A large number of the farmers in
Nevada County are finding out that
if you treat an apple orchard right
it pays good dividends. A crop failure comes no more often than a blue
moon. And do the trees grow! There
are plenty of old trees in this district that are more than a _ foot
through, that come out every spring
with a glory of spring bloom, that
bear prodigious crops, and through
sun and storm flourish like the proverbial green (bay tree, only there
never was any thing wicked about an
apple tree. With a little care they

UNDER LANDON
False statements being circulated
particularly throughout the gold
mining districts of California that
the Republican party intends sharply to reduce the price of gold, met
with prompt and emphatic denial’
yesterday.
In a telegram to Richard W. Barrett, campaign director for Landon
and Knox in Northern California,
John Hamilton, National Republican Campaign Director late yesterday
sent the following telegram from
Chicago:
“Rumors to the effect that Gov. ernor Landon intends to return the
rice of gold to twenty dollars have
absolutely no foundation.
“The Republican platform specifically advocates taking away from
the President the power to regulate
the value of money. This clearly
means that any change in gold price
or the gold content of the dollar
would be made by congress and not
-Anderson,
by the President. Governor Landon’s .
‘ telegram to the Republican Convento suggest he contemplates a return
to the old gold price.’’

There’s no one who speaks your language? :
What a perfectly terrible plight!
From dawn till all hours of the night!
Then what may your language be,
Some wierdly exotic jargon
From an alien land over the sea?
Is your speech too technical maybe,
Or ponderously scientific ?
Is your language so very distinguished,
So learned and worldly wise
That no one can grasp your meaning
‘And fashion the proper replies?
Well then, descend to our level—
Let’s talk of such every day things
As business, the coming election,
Law breakers, captains and kings;
You may toss in stray bits of book lore,
Be sure we shall not run away;
