Well, then, whyinhell be selfish and stingy? Why not
make the plan apply to everybody, regardless of age and

. Of course, everybody will have to quit work to get it,
but who objects to quitting his job? It’s a lousy job, anyway.

SPECIAL SESSION
TO BATTLE WITH
RELIEF POLITICS
By CLEM WHITAKER
Relief, perhaps the hottest hot potato that ever popped into politics, is
still sizzling, with every indication
that it may explode:and raise merry
hob at the forthcoming special session of the State Legislature.
The term ‘production for use’’. is
now passe—-and has been changed,
in modern relief vocabulary to ‘“‘production for need.”
But the issue is still hot as a firecracker!
Then, too, there’s the red hot issue of ‘‘politics in relief’’—the charge
that civil service has been thrown
to the four winds and that political
henchmen are taking over jobs formerly held by trained relief workers. :
’ Similarly, there are charges that
relief recipients are being organized
as a political bloc—that dues are being collected for political purposes
from the funds they receive from
California taxpayers:for food and
clothing.
This phase of the ‘‘politics in relief’ argument will be brought to a
head by Assemblyman Albert C. Wollenberg of San Francisco with his
“little Hatch bill,’’ patterned after
recent federal legislation barring
government employees from political
activities. ’
The Wollenberg bill, which promHARMONIZED
