Between each partition of books there is room to” walk; thus the saving of space in arranging the library in this manner is enormous. ‘The stock of books, perhaps, exceeds 15,000 number Mr. Gladstone has little difficulty in placing his hand upon any volume ‘that he may require. There are three writingdesks in the room; one is chiefly reserved for correspondence of a political nature, and another is used by Mrs; Gladstone. Pronenee Valley, Foot-Hill and 4 , Mountain . os 7 A Combination of Natura) Advantages Not Rxcelied in the State*An Encottraging Season. . {8. ¥. Chronicle, Jan. 1, 1859.) Nevada county claims special attention as oné of the few counties of California in ‘which-the three principal industries of the State—mining, agriculture and horticulture—are extensively earried on side by side. The county is accessible by rail, the Central Pacific Railroad running along its southern boundary a considerable distance, and crossing its extreme eastern end, while the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad intersects ita central portion, extending north from Colfax to Nevada City and passing through Grass Valleyin its route. Geographithe central jine of the State, and extends from Nibe § Sacramento valley on the west to and ‘beyond t the visa of the Sierra Nevada, In the western-portion the altitude averages some 1300 feet above the sea level, and the surface consists of gently sloping hills and ridges with here and there large sized tracts of comparatively level land. In the central section is the upper part of the hortio@ltural belt, and here also are most of the great quartz aud gravel mines which have since pioneer days been _. yielding such vast quantities of. gold. . M The eastern extremity is very mountainous in character, the. principal industries thereof being lumbering,’ iceshipping dnd grazing. About 250,000 acres\of land are contained in thé horticultural belt of the county, which includes the townships of Nevada, Grass Valley, Rough and Ready and Bridyeport.: l A great variety of productions is insured within these limits. Fruits and vegetables maturing early, or requir ing a long and warm season, thrive particularly well on lands facing to the -+south where the rays of the sun have full foree; while the larger and more —. slewly—maturing fruits flourish on the cooler and more moist* lands with a northern exposure, The-valley lands between the ridges and hills have in most cases but little brush upon them, and though well furnished with water from springs and streams are not as wel! calculated for fruit growing ag for the production of hay and pasturage. Among the most profitable fruits to be raised here is-the pear, which is followed closely by the apple, both: attaining in Neyada county the greatest qualities, Grape“growing is rapidly becoming an important industry here, Your check for Ten Thousand Dollars, a month before the} this being the natural home of the vine, Nevada county port wine has. ¢ already in two competitive exhibitions where the principal wine-producing first prize, and:other varieties of wine Warxin R. In the extrenie lowprofitably grown, the fruit maturing unustally early and a full crop being generally obtained. No county in the State is more abundantly watered. Mining and irrigation ditches, fed from natural and artificial lakes in the higher altitudes, thread all sections, This water is of the’purest, and the supply never fails. ‘The climate has an invigorating freshness and salubrity that is not to be found in lower lands. There are no fogs, no blizzards, no malaria. Large numbers of people come annually from the seacoast and vaileys to spend the summers bere, and thus rebuild their shattered constitution. Adjacent to Nevada City and Grass Valley are located such well-known Providence, Nevada City, W oming, Pittsburg, Nevereweat; Idaho, Empire, North Star and many others. The princip :I'claims are equipped with the most modern machinery for’ mining and milling. Washington and Eureka townships baye been for the, past few years rapidly rising into prominence as quariz-mining sections, and several properties there—such as the California, Rocky Glen, Washington, Yuba, ete,—are paying well. A number of others are destinéd to soon become dividend payers. The Delhi of Bridgeport township has within two years come into prominence as one of the best properties in the State, Other claims in that locality now being prospected give indications of proving equally rich. Meadow Luke district, which in the sixties experienced a rebearish le boom which collapsed as suddenly as it came because of the failure of any of the processes then known to separate the gold from the base metals contained in the rock, was during the past summer a scene of renewed activity because of a syndieate having gone in there and partiall demonstrated that the ores are reducible when properly treated. That is peculiarly the ‘‘snow belt” of: the county, ng at the summit of the Sierra. Nevada, When the winter storme are over, the camp, now hibernating, will come out of its sheil. As tothe towns of the count . pes’ Grase Vellore with her tay areas ° ey ng marked prosperity Stee of the success of quartz mining there; ‘which was never siving auch large returns 4s now: Nevada City, the zounty seat, is laboring under somewhat of a depression so far as business is concerned, becwtse of such setbacks as me stoppage of hydraulic mining, age conflicts in ony or two of the sy quartz mines and a reduction in those and tect or three . w, jae mines.
