One of many “physic-—mechanical”’ experiments of the Aeronautical Research Institute of Milumich, the leg used electro mechanical devices wired to the severed nerve endings. The Germans believed that gatlvamic electricity flowing alone the nerves would supply the power impulees and that these could be controlled men‘tally, manipulating the lez according to the wishes of the wearer. Investigators beliewe that varying degrees of concentra'tion were to be employed by the ampaiteee on the theory that mental intensity would act like a rhostat, comtrolling the amount.of nervous elecitricity and moving the leg in the manner de-sired. The Germans ‘were as much interested in proving the disputed point of the existenice of nervous electricity as they were in perfecting a fool proof artificial lege. Originally located im Mfumich, the Aeronautical Research Fnistitute -wae moved in August 1944 to Germish-]. Jartenkirchen, a mountain retreat where each scientist was given a combined house and laboratory of his own, These units were located 300 feet apart so that the oiccupants could work undisturbed. The “mountain site was selected because its beauty “lent itself to new ideas.’’ Physicians, technicians, physicists, chemists and psychologists were employed there. While the “electracal was still in the experimental stage when the war ended the institute had completed work on an artificial limb considered superior to any prosthetic device previously used. This was a hydraulic leg depending on a handoperating valve and a piston like arrangement in the calf. This artificial limb owes its success largely to the valve controlling the knee-action. For standing, walking, or escending and descending inclines, the knee joint must be maintained at various angles. The = hydraulic system used in this leg does this with the voluntary control valve. A slight pull at the valve allows a slow knee flexion. A medium pull ‘provides knee fixation and strong ipull permits its extension. The last is essential in climbimg stairs or inclines and makes it possible for the amputee to do this in a natural manner. Another interesting institute development was an artificial arm in which the hand was moved by a magmet and controlled by the stump muscles, Magnets also were used in another type of knee which was controlled in the same manner. ‘Much work has been done by institution members ‘on eye prosthesis. ‘Here photo electric and sellenium cells were used to convert visual stimuli into auditory channels. The Germans claimed this arrangement worked well enough to enable blind Persons to find their way about amd in some cases to distinguish letters of the alphalbet. leg”’ Dept. Motor Vehicles Warns Of Winter Hazards Approach of the rainy season in California brought a warning today from the Departmentt of Motor Vehicles to motorists of Nevada Ciity that extra hazardous conditions will require careful driving to. prevent accidents. Among the hazards listed by Director Edgar E. Lampton as peculiar to the season are: Slippery pavements particularly during first rains causing tendency too slip anid skid at speeds above normal. Smoothness of tires and generally fanity condition of automotive eqoipment due to current shortages. Shorter hours of daylighitt driving increasing hazards of early morning and latte evening operatiion. Increased. pedestrian congestion due to holiday shopping. (Director Lampton pointted out that department records show traffic accidents always go up in the fall months because of these conditions. (He recommended the following as safety measures: Have your brakes, lighits, tires and windshield wipers checked. Reduce your speed at least 10 miles an hour at night and during foggy or rainy weather. : Keep a sharp eye out for pedestrians, particularly school children, at all times. Never drink intxicantts under any ‘cirdumstanices before driving. Pedestrians should wear some article of white.clothing at night to increase vilsibility. The principal sources of borax in the United States are found in the white borax marshes of California and Nevada. Carsiné Had ‘Odd Helicopter a Utilizing the principles of jet pro(pulsion, one of the oddest helicopters produced .by the Germans in World} War II is now undergoimg -analysis by Technical Intelligence of the Materiel‘Command at Wright Field. Tihe helicopter which may _ contribuite substantially to the development of rotor blade air craft in tha opinion of intelligence technicians . is the WINF 342 V4., Built by Friedrich Doblehofiff at Weimar Neustadter in Austria, it is the fourth and last in a seriés of experimental helicopters built iby Doblhoff. The first. two models were never flown; the third, the one place V3 crashed and with modifications became the two place v4. The rotor blades in this model are revolved by the exhaust from a jet engine, piped to the blade terminals. In this way the aircraft can hover or go up and down. Forward speed is attained by tipping the tail elevators. A pusher propeller at the rear of the fuselage provides a slip stream, allowing easier directional controi. This igs powered by a small motor which is carried in addition to the jet engine. But neither engine direatly propels the V4. Using only the tail elevator, the V4 cruises alt speeds up to 25 miles an hour. Air initelligence men believe this speed can be greatly increased lby the addition of another propeller to provide forward thrust. Experiments are now being conducted along these lines. Although fuel consumption by the jet engine is approximately six timgreater-than in-a~standard —heli= copter engine the engine is used for such brief periods that Air Intelligence experts do not regard the unsual fuel consumption as a serious disadvantage. The jet is used only in ascending descending or ing. The V4 has several superior features not incorporated in standard helicopters. Among these are freedom from torque, elimination of a ‘transmission system and excellent hovering performarice. Nhe simplicity of its design and operation is another factor commenited on by men who have examined the aircraft. hoverDinosaus Smart Kept Out Of Sun Dinosaurs ruled the earth for more than 100,000,000 years possibly because they were smart enough to stay in the shade when it was hot,
ito get into the sun when it was cold. This theory may explain in part the absolute dominance o the dinosaurs during the Meszoic Age, according to Dr. Raymord R. Cowles asséciate professor of biology on the Los Angeles campus of the University of California and Dr. Edwin H. Colbert and Dr. Charles M. Bogart of the American-Museum of Natural History. Writing in a recent issue of the Bulletin of the American ‘Museum of (Natural Hitsory the scientists declare: “Tt may be that upland forms gought the shade of trees during the daytime while lowland forms spent a greater portion of the daylight thours in swamps, lakes or rivers.’’ The authors conclude that there ig still much tio be learned about the dinosaurs: and especially why they ‘became extinict.
